Meal Planning Apps: Comparing the Best Apps for Family Meal Planning

Make dinner fun and easy with our favorite meal planning and recipe management apps.

  • Saves recipes from across the web
  • Customizable recipes and lists
  • Lets you add your own recipes
  • Creates well-consolidated grocery lists
  • Smartly prevents your phone from entering sleep mode, so you can easily glance at recipes
  • One-time purchase

Mealboard: For The Type

If youre obsessed with organization, youre going to love MealBoard. This app not only lets you search for recipes and add them to your calendar, but it keeps track of what ingredients you have on hand at home. Lets be honest, youll need to get a sitter and set aside some serious time to set this app up properly, but once you do it is a really powerful tool. The app lets you know you dont need to buy onions for that recipe, because you already have them. Brilliant! And by entering the price for the ingredients too, it will let you know just how much youre spending on a meal. No longer buying duplicates when you shop hello, expensive spices and avoiding pricey recipes in the first place makes this a great app for people on a budget who are willing to keep up with whats on hand by updating the app as you cook.

Worth It Even Though I Only Use It On A Desktop Computer

I have been a member 4 or 5 years. It is the only Black Friday sale I do, as the membership is 50% off then. Even when I dont use it daily, I find it is still worth it. Its like any other tool, I dont use my wheelbarrow, or my snow boots daily, but I am sure glad I have them when I need them. I need this tool when my life gets overwhelming, I can anchor back in regular nutritious meals. I also use it to plan out things that are aging in my pantry. I use the meal planning as I dont have a smart phone with data plan, so the feature of taking the shopping list with me to the store is not as useful, though I do print out the shopping list occasionally. In spite of using only a portion of the program, the program still has value. When I get tired off my own gluten free recipes, I can connect to others who have already tagged recipes as gluten free. This program really made my switch to gluten free so much easier. The other aspect of this program is it is stable, the people that created it continue to add features without losing the basic functioning of it like what happens to some programs. This program might be the one thing that convinces me to get a cell phone to fully use the shopping list feature.

Best Apps For Meal Prepping

Whether you want to save recipes, build grocery lists, or need help budgeting, there is an app that can help you meal prep like a pro.

Meal prepping, or planning ahead for several days or even a weeks worth of meals, has plenty of benefits. But if youre new to it, it can feel overwhelming at first. Luckily, help is as close as your smartphone. Downloadable apps can take the guesswork and hassle out of grocery shopping, recipe hunting, accommodating special dietary needs, and more.

Apps can be helpful because of the features they provide that help streamline and simplify the meal prepping process, says Mia Syn, RD, owner of Nutrition by Mia in Charleston, South Carolina. For example, many apps allow users to choose specific recipes, create shopping lists, and track nutritional information. She adds that some even help save money and offer educational components, like cooking tips.

Although research on the impacts of meal prep apps is limited, a study published in December 2018 in JMIR Mhealth Uhealth found that they can be used to aid healthy food making decisions not just for individuals, but for entire families. And that alone is enough reason to try one .

MealPrepPro Meal Plans App Download

  • Complying with suggested plan takes time

MealPrepPro is designed for people who want to cook large batches of healthy food so they just have to heat and eat later in the week. The recipes are quick to make and designed for you to make a big batch one day, and then youll eat it for several days after. Sure its repetitive, but if youre watching what you eat and dont have a lot of time, youll always have a healthy meal waiting for you. If youd rather cook fresh every day, or cook an even bigger batch to freeze, you can set the app to do that too.

Set up your preferences according to your diet and either let the app determine your macro goals based on your health stats or you can set them manually. The app will create a weekly plan of lunch and dinner from its collection of recipes. While the app focuses on lunch and dinner, you can easily add breakfast and snacks.

You can customize the plan if you want. Itll even offer suggestions if you want to swap out a dish with something else. The recipes are easy to follow with step-by-step videos, but theyre made for one or two people, so if youre feeding a family youll have to increase the serving size to scale up. You can also add your own recipes. The plan generates an organized shopping list, and you can cross things off as you pick them up.

The app syncs with Apple Health and the Apple Watch, so you can keep track of your calories/macros, water consumption and follow the shopping list from your wrist.

More On Meal Planning

Ive been a dietitian now for a long time , and if theres one thing I know for sure, its that fad diets are best avoided. This is why Im so pleased that whole food diets are being talked about more and more.

Rather than a diet, I prefer to think of a whole food diet as a way of life. Eating this way is balanced, and it is a great way to support your all-around body health and longevity. Plus, its delicious andin my opinionnot limiting either, which is a massive bonus.

A well-balanced diet follows some fairly basic principles and, in essence, consists of plenty of the following:

    • Fruit

    Route Planner Google Maps

    Price: Free

Google Maps is a bit of an obvious choice for this. You can find all kinds of businesses along your route, navigate to where you need to go, and it includes niceties like real-time traffic updates. However, the big feature is the support for multiple stops as one would probably need when performing a route. Google Maps supports over 200 countries and you can download maps for temporary offline use. Another somewhat decent, albeit niche, app in this space is Routin.

    Paprika Recipe Manager 3

Price: Free / Up to $4.99

Paprika is a lot like Cookmate. It focuses mostly on storing recipes for offline use by letting you enter your own manually or scraping from websites. However, this one is actually the better meal planner app between the two. The app has daily, weekly, and monthly calendars for meal planning along with the usual integrated grocery list to get everything organized quickly. You can also create menus, scale ingredients, and share recipes via email. It doesnt have the online syncing features of My CookBook, but you can still import and export if you switch devices.

What Is A Meal Planning App

Meal planning apps store recipes on your Android or iOS mobile device, which makes preparing dishes incredibly easy. Keeping track of recipes can be a chore, especially if youre the old-school type who still jots down notes with a pen and paper. Finding recipes online isn’t much better, since you need to bookmark pages, print them out, or save the ingredients and instructions in a document. After all, no one wants to shuffle through papers or search for files to find a recipe when it’s cooking time.

Note that meal planning apps are typically subscription-based services. The prices vary, but you can expect to pay $3 to $5 per month to use their many features that extend beyond organizing recipes . Of the services we’ve tested, Paprika Recipe Manager is the lone exception it’s a one-time, $4.99 purchase.

Best Hacks For Sticking With A Whole Food Diet

Here are some tips to help you stick with a whole food diet and develop this lifestyle.

    1. Practice Batch Cooking

Especially in the beginning, if youve been used to eating more convenience-based or packaged foods, youre likely to feel like you spend the majority of your life in the kitchen. So, Id suggest getting your cookbooks out and planning around five things to make per week. If you make double, or even triple portions depending on your household, youll have enough quantity to last several meals.

For example, his could be homemade granola. Make it once, and thats breakfast sorted for a week. Whole food diet ingredients like oats, quinoa, buckwheat, nuts, and seeds are all delicious, and great nutritional resources to keep you feeling full until lunchtime.

I also love to make big stews, sauces, and curries that can happily be reheated and added throughout the course of a few days.

    2. Make Your Own Convenience Foods

Sticking to a new way of eating can be really difficult, especially for your willpower. So, its very important to make it as easy as possible for yourself.

    Pre-chop. Pre-chop. Pre-chop.

Have You Tried Any Good Meal Planning Apps

Lets be real:Being a mom means we have less time and patience for meal preparation. Our minds are mostly on things we need to get done and keeping our tiny humans alive, which includes feeding them.

Like most moms, I find myself frequently wondering what to cook for my kids dinner. Before I started looking into meal planning apps, I was kind of at a loss and didnt want to make mac and cheese again. Thankfully, Ive discovered a few handy apps that can make meal planning and food shopping a lot easier and far less stressful.

    Meal Planning Features You Need

There are key criteria that you should seek when selecting the ideal kitchen companion. Above all, a meal planning app should give you access to a trove of recipes. Depending on the app, you can find the recipes using an in-app browser, a recipe importing tool, or a robust library pulled from the web. Many of the apps listed here combine those useful elements.

Another notable feature is the ability to edit recipes within the app. This gives you the freedom to modify and experiment with any recipes you discover, or add notes when needed. The best meal planning apps also let you create and customize a digital pantry to inventory your kitchen goods, which can be used in conjunction with an in-app grocery list for easier shopping.

Several meal planning apps tap your phones camera to assist you in the kitchen. Some let you scan produce you have on hand to find recipes, while others let you scan items in your pantry for easier inventory management. Video supplements are a common feature, too. Many apps include either video recipe guides that offer step-by-step cooking instructions or bite-size overviews. And, as the category’s name suggests, these apps let you create a meal schedule by using either an in-app or external calendar.
