How We Chose The Password Managers

Easiest way to save passwords with IOS or Android

We looked at over a dozen password managers for this review. At the top of our list were providers who were widely used and trusted with no critical security issues. Ease of use was also important as was the ability to share data across multiple devices and platforms.

We also looked for password managers with a good set of features in their free plans. We only included a few that didnt offer a free plan because of the quality of features in their tiered paid plans.

Finally, we looked at cost. Although most offered strong free plans, we made sure to include options that provided additional security features, accessibility, and users for a reasonable price. In the end, paying for a password manager is an investment in a company dedicated to protecting sensitive customer data from the onslaught of cyberattacks and a small price for peace of mind.

The Best Android Password Manager With Multiple Storage Options

1Password

Not keen on the idea of relying on a third-party company’s servers to store your encrypted information? 1Password gives you the option to use Dropbox, iCloud, or even a direct local network connection in addition to opting into its own cloud servers for secure cross-device syncing.

Those extra options come at a cost, though both in terms of actual dollars and in terms of the experience you’ll receive. 1Password starts at $36 a year for individuals, with a free tier of service available only if you opt to skip the simple multidevice syncing option. The family plan costs $60 a year for up to five people, meanwhile, while team plans run $48 per user per year and business plans with advanced access control are $96 per user per year.

And despite the additional dollars, using 1Password on Android just isn’t particularly pleasant especially compared to the standards LastPass and Keeper establish. The service has certainly gotten better since my previous evaluation in 2018, but it’s still a noticeable step behind the others in polish and overall user experience.

For instance, 1Password doesn’t immediately recognize that a password saved within the Twitter app should also apply to the Twitter website and so even if you have credentials saved for one of those areas, it’ll fail to provide them to you in the other.

1Password lacks some of the poise and intelligence exhibited by other Android password managers.

A Great Free Password Manager: Bitwarden

Sharing among five peopleNone

Bitwarden is the only password manager we tested that separates its premium features from its family plans, which makes its pricing tricky to comprehendboth Bitwarden Free and Bitwarden Premium accounts can be included in family plans. Bitwarden Premium adds more features, while the Bitwarden family plan adds the ability to share between more than two people. If you want to share between more than two people and you also want the additional features, you need to pay for both upgrades. Once youre prepared to pay for five premium accounts and a family plan, however, it makes more sense to get a 1Password family plan for about the same price instead.

Bitwardens documentation has improved over the years, even introducing video tutorials, but 1Password still does a more comprehensive job onboarding people whove never used a password manager before. Bitwarden does offer some tools 1Password doesnt, including occasional training events that walk you through the setup process and features. If you cant attend, you can replay the event too. We think 1Password is easier to get the hang of using if youve never used a password manager before, but Bitwarden isnt far behind.

How To Deactivate Your Chrome Password Manager And Switch To Lastpass

  • Make sure you are signed into your Chrome browser with your Google account
  • In the Chrome Settings menu under ‘Autofill’, click on the ‘Passwords’ drop-down and switch the toggle off so Chrome no longer offers to save your passwords
  • Switch the second toggle off for “Auto Sign-In” so that LastPass can take over filling your credentials on all our favorite sites.
  • To ensure all your existing saved passwords transfer over to LastPass, export your previously saved passwords and logins into a CSV file
  • These Are The Best Android Password Managers

1Password has taken a long, winding road to get to Android prominence, but the once Apple-only app is now intuitive and at feature-parity with its iOS counterpart.

If you’re looking for a beautifully designed password manager, it doesn’t get much better than Dashlane. The app has been around for years and has seen its fair share of design changes, but the latest of which is arguably the best, plus it’s pretty darn great at managing your passwords.

It’s tough to ignore LastPass even with changes to the free version of the app. While the newly introduced limitations are a source of frustration, LastPass Premium is still a viable option for many.

The great thing about 1Password is its simplicity. Like all options in this list, the app ties into Android’s built-in password manager SDK, but if an app doesn’t support it for whatever reason, 1Password has its own keyboard that lets you quickly copy-and-paste a username and password into the appropriate field.

1Password supports tags and groups it can be used to generate random solid passwords or 2FA codes it supports multiple vaults, one for personal and one for a family or a team, and switches between them seamlessly it’s fast to load and rarely crashes. 1Password also supports U2F keys now , adding an extra level of protection to your account and your passwords.

According to our managing editor Daniel Bader, “1Password does everything well and is worth my annual subscription. In fact, for $36 a year, it’s a bargain.”

Free Vs Paid Password Manager: Pros And Cons

5 Best Free Password Manager Apps For Android of 2022

Dr. Sid Potbhare, CEO at Untethered Labs, tells us more about the advantages and disadvantages of free and paid password managers especially with regards to businesses and enterprises.

“Password managers are fast becoming the tool of choice to manage our every increasing number of passwords. They are most used to simply store passwords in a vault for access using a master password – so basically one password to rule them all. However, there are several advanced features that paid password managers provide that can further enhance their usability and effectiveness in keeping your passwords secure.

    Free password managers

Once the user is logged in to the password vault, all the save passwords are available to the user to auto-fill or copy and paste, avoiding having to memorize and constantly retype these passwords. These passwords may be saved in the browser itself, and you can get access to them whenever you log on to the computer.

Other nice-to-have features typically include the ability to generate random and complex passwords, ability to detect anomalies in the attempted login, ability to use other mechanisms instead of a master password including physical tokens and biometric features. Of course, there are limitations to free password managers that may not meet everyones needs. For example, some password managers limit free users by the number of passwords they can save – this can be an unacceptable factor for many.

Sticky Password High Browser Compatibility + Portable Usb Version

Sticky Password Free offers unlimited password storage on unlimited devices, but it doesnt sync between devices, like LastPass and Avira Password Manager do. That said, unlike most password managers that are only compatible with the most popular browsers, Sticky Password works on 10+ browsers, including specialized ones like Pale Moon and Seamonkey.

On Windows, Sticky Password Free also includes USB portability you can download your vault to a USB drive to access Sticky Password on any Windows PC. This is especially valuable for students and travelers who need to access their online accounts on different computers.

I also like that the free plan includes biometric logins, so you can use a fingerprint or face scan to access your password vault on any device that supports biometric scanning.

On the other hand, Sticky Passwords free plan doesnt include password sharing. Dashlanes free version lets you securely share 5 logins with friends, family, or work colleagues.

Upgrading to Sticky Password Premium , adds syncing between multiple devices, password sharing, secure cloud backup. Plus, a portion of every purchase goes to a non-profit dedicated to saving manatees!

    Amazon.com: Password Safe

Password Safe is an Android-only, totally offline solution for storing your passwords. Its a heavily Material Design-inspired app with just a few extra features, so if you need something simple and lightweight, this is it.

The app secures everything behind your master password using 256-bit encryption, and its totally offline so theres no risk of anything getting compromised over the internet. It offers a password generator that you can even use from a widget on your home screen, and it organizes and stores everything for you locally with no internet access or unnecessary Android permissions. For someone that relies heavily on their Android phone without needing a tablet or a computer, this is the way to go.

The Pro version offers some useful extra features, like fingerprint authentication, attaching pictures to entries, custom entry fields, automatic logout, and a unique self-destruct feature for a very powerful layer of security. The app does also support exporting its database, which you can then upload to Dropbox/Drive/etc. which allows for manually backing up and restoring your info, but since it doesnt have internet permissions in Android, thats the extent of its syncing and backup functionality.

Password Safe only costs $5.99 for the Pro features, which is by far the cheapest solution on this list. Its customizable, its secure, and it takes Googles design to heart, so theres a lot to like even if its short on the feature list.
