The Trouble With Iphones
While doing research on parental control apps, we ran across a number of complaints about apps that werent working well on iPhones and iPads. This isnt the app’s fault and you didnt install it incorrectly. Problems began popping up with these apps when Apple introduced iOS12 with Screen Time controls in 2018. In fact, many parental control apps were removed from the App Store at this time. The app developers were told by Apple that they violated App Store guidelines.
Basically, Apple removed apps that used Mobile Device Management and Virtual Private Networks to implement browser, time usage, and website monitoring controls. Instead, Apple introduced its Screen Time feature to install parental controls on iPhones and iPads, providing the same services as many parental control apps. The removed apps were no longer supported on iPhones, so the apps performance suffered. More recently, Apple has relented somewhat and some parental control apps are once again available in the App Store. However, many customers are still experiencing difficulty with some of the monitoring features they offer.
How I Tested And Ranked The Best Parental Control Apps For Android
This was a long process where I bought over 50 parental control apps and tested them out on my childrens Android smartphones and tablets.
- Can my kids bypass these filters: I challenged the kids to try and find hacks or workarounds to avoid the filters. If they were successful, I tried blocking their hack, for example, many programs cant monitor Android apps but have a feature that lets me block the apps. The programs that didnt have a way for me to block the kids hack, I left off the list.
- Time management tools: Screen time addiction is a very real problem, and therefore finding a solution was a priority. Once again, I challenged the kids to use the phone or apps when it was supposed to be blocked, and if they could I didnt include the app on my list.
- Ease of use: Monitoring the kids Android devices shouldnt be that difficult to manage. From downloading to setting up the limits, I wanted to make sure that you dont have to be a tech or Android genius to get started. Therefore, any program that required an Android root was immediately eliminated.
- Customer Support: I put the customer service teams to the test. I used the Live Chat feature and checked if they were using real people or bots. I opened tickets and sent emails to test the response time, and I always tested the money-back policy to see if they would honor it and return my money.

What Parents Are Saying
Bark actually notified us of serious suicidal thoughts and our son just completed a two week stint in the hospital where he received treatment and was diagnosed with major depressive disorder. Thanks to the app we were notified. We are very appreciative.
Bark the best $9 I spend every month. My daughter was cyberbullied a few months ago and its easier to monitor any concerns without totally invading her privacy. I only get notifications if there are items of concern Totally worth it!
Qustodio: Call And Texting Management
This is an Android-only feature, and Google now prevents Qustodio from including this feature in the Qustodio app in Google Play Store. If you wish to monitor your child’s calls and texts, you will need to sideload a separate version of the app downloaded directly from Qustodio’s website.
Once you have installed this version of the app on the child’s phone, you’ll need to restart the phone for the new features to take effect. Then you’ll see the options for this section in the parental dashboard.
This feature worked exactly as advertised once it was enabled. Qustodio is the only app we tested recently that still lets you block calls and read texts, so if this is a critical feature to you then Qustodio needs to be high up on your list.

MMGuardian is a great option for parents who want to be on top of what their kids are doing online. The app is only available for android and ios mobile devices. The app allows parents to monitor text messages and some social media messages, and receive alerts when inappropriate content appears in these text messages. The app will send you detailed reports on the usage activities of your kids. In addition you can of course block adult content sites and set up shut down times to limit usage. If you have one iOS device that you want to monitor this is probably one of the best and most affordable options for you.
Why We Recommend Android For Parental Control Apps
Android and Apple each have their pros and cons, but if you have not bought the device you want to monitor, we recommend buying one on Android.
Android users have an added benefit compared to iOS users, with more parental control apps and more features available for each app like tracking all social media accounts. It is also much easier to root an Android phone then to jailbreak an iOS device, making the software much easier to install.

Monitor Your Child’s Devices
Gone are the days when a single parental control utility on the family PC was sufficient for keeping your kids safe and productive. Modern kids use all kinds of internet-connected devices, and parental control systems must keep up.
Before settling on a particular parental control utility, you need to make sure that it supports all the device types in your household. While all the products in this roundup support Windows and Android, compatibility with macOS and iOS varies. Apple’s Screen Time features for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS are quite capable and come with the added benefit of first-party support. Microsoft and Google both offer first-party parental control tools, too. You should consider using these free first-party options before you pay for a third-party solution.

Spyine is not a free undetectable spy app for Android, but its available at a pocket-friendly monthly price. Other spy apps out there usually cost much more. Its not uncommon to find a spy app that costs upwards of $50 a month.

You dont need to commit to buying the app before you try it. They offer a free live demo on their official website.

Set Up Parental Controls On Google Play
For instance, you can tell Google Play to only show your kids stuff rated T for Teen or lower and the Play Store will automatically filter out stuff with Mature 17+ or Adults only 18+ content. This also ties into Google Family Link to an extent so we recommend using this information alongside that app for maximum results. We have a .
Net Nanny: App Management
Net Nanny has changed things with its app management, removing apps as a primary category on the parent app and web portal. Now you access app management from the settings, which was a secondary access point previously. I prefer this as app blocking isn’t something you need to access regularly.
Net Nanny manages to block a few more apps on iOS than many of its competitors, with a little over 100 apps eligible to be blocked. But this is still just a drop in the bucket, and no one manages to compare to OurPact in this regard.
So if you opt for Net Nanny and your child has an iOS device, the best solution will be to delete any apps on your child’s device that you don’t approve of and then set up Apple’s own Ask to Buy feature so that you can approve all app downloads in the future.
On Android, Net Nanny gives you complete control of your child’s apps and the ability to block or allow any app on their device. While you will be notified if your child installs a new app, if you want control over what they install, then you need to use Android’s built-in Play Store parental approval system.
Net Nanny’s app management on Android covers the basics, but it lacks some extras like the ability to set time restrictions or schedule specific apps.

Eset Parental Control For Android
Leaves room for improvement
Reasons to avoid
ESET Parental Control for Android sticks to a single platform, but it doesn’t shine even there, lacking text-message- and call-monitoring features and implementing clunky controls on what it does have.
The app management and time management you receive with the free version of ESET Parental Control for Android do work well, as do the location tracking and geofencing you’ll get if you pay for a subscription. And we liked the feature that lets a kid send an SOS message to designated phones with a single tap.
Still, the $30 yearly plan is not worth shelling out for unless you get it bundled with ESET Smart Security Premium. That’s because Kaspersky Safe Kids does more than ESET Parental Control for Android on four times as many platforms and at half the price.
Reasons to avoid
MMGuardian has nearly every parental-control feature you might want on Android phones, including the ability to log, block and read text messages, and log and block calls.
It’s also the only app we know of that can still read texts and messages on iOS, although it can’t block them, thanks to Mac and PC software that combs through an iPhone’s backups.
But the user interfaces are outdated and frustrating on both platforms. The iOS and Android smartphone apps offer location tracking and excellent web filtering, and MMGuardian now has an artificial-intelligence component to spot nudity in saved images.

How To Ensure That Your Parental Control Software Is Foolproof
Some older kids may try to look for ways to evade detection. Here are some pointers to ensure that your software is effective.
- Ensure no older devices are lying around your house because your teens might use themto evade detection. Consider using re-router level restriction.
- Check your childs iPhone to see if your child has downloaded additional apps. Go to Profiles and Device Management to view unknown profiles or app names, then delete them.
- Use the screen time feature to stop your child from downloading forbidden apps or using the browser to log into them.
- Restrict your childs device from downloading VPNs, which can allow them to surf forbidden sites undetected.
- Enable the screenshot feature to record anything that your kids do with their phones. Teens know how to send messages by sending pics.
Best Overall Solution Mspy
mSpy is the best overall system for parental control. It can go completely undetected on a users phone, and it doesnt use any extra battery power. It will work on just about any iPhone, Android, or Tablet, without being rooted or modified in any way.
Monitor Chats on Social Media
Private conversations on social media are filled with dangerous content. This is where your children are most likely to come in contact with strangers. mSpy lets you monitor the conversations that are happening on your childs social media.
It is possible to monitor and log chats from these popular social media apps:
In addition to social media apps, texts and imessages can also be monitored. Track sent and received messages on default texting apps, so you dont let strangers or bad actors slip into your childs phone.
Live Location Tracking
The live location tracking will be able to show you where every phone on your account is located. This uses the phones GPS to deliver accurate and up-to-date information about where a person is. You can set up a geo-fence that will alert you when a member of the family leaves the designated area. This is an effective way to make sure nobody is going anywhere that they are not allowed to.
Monitor Call History
If youre worried about who your child might be talking to on phone calls, you can check the call history of a user. See incoming and outgoing calls, as well as the time and date of each call.

Facebook And Youtube Monitoring
Qustodio’s Facebook monitoring tool can show you who your child messages with and what they post on their wall. Since modern kids use a wide range of other social media sites, such as Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, TikTok, and Twitter, this is not overwhelmingly helpful.
The child has to log in to Facebook at least once on the desktop to enable the tracking plug-in, but after that, it records their activity on the site regardless of the device they use to access it. If you do have the child’s login credentials, you can also set this up yourself from either the desktop or the mobile app. Qustodio is clever in the way it enforces monitoring. A child cannot access Facebook if the plug-in is disabled or removed.
Qustodio can also monitor your child’s activity on YouTube, though the capabilities vary by platform. For Windows, macOS, and Android devices, you can see what videos your kids watch and what they search for on YouTube’s website and the Android app. For monitored iOS devices, you can only see searches and their viewing history on the mobile YouTube site. Kaspersky Safe Kids has similar functionality.
Qustodio gives you the option to specifically restrict the YouTube app or website from this section, as well as set a time limit on usage. This is more convenient than making you go to the regular app-blocking or web filter sections. Parents can click on YouTube activity entries to watch the videos for themselves.
Ensure Childrens Digital Safety
The most threatening and happening online crime today is cyberbullying. Internet harassment mainly occurs on social media sites, and the bully can post rumors, sexual remarks, personal information, and threaten the victim.
In addition, online threats include predators and child molesters that can inflict children or teenagers on dating or gaming sites.
So, a parental control app is useful in protecting kids from abduction and keeping them safe on the roads.

The Best Gps Trackers For Kids You Can Buy Today
Reasons to buy
Reasons to avoid
Our pick for the best GPS tracker for keeping tabs on kids, pets and older adults has been the Jiobit, which is small and light . A loop lets you attach the tracker to a backpack, shoe, belt loop, keychain or necklace, and we found we only had to charge it every five days or so.
The makers of Jiobit have rolled out a new version, the $129 Jiobit Next. It promises better battery life and more accurate tracking, thanks to a new antenna design. Support for low-power wide area networks should help the Jiobit Next perform better in areas without great cellular coverage. We plan on testing the device shortly, so come back to see where it lands in our rankings.
As for the original Jiobit, with no screen, microphone or speaker, it feels very durable. It’s shock-resistant and waterproof with an IPX8 rating I doubt my 6-year-old could destroy it without a dedicated, sustained effort. We threw it on the ground, stepped on it and left it on the driveway during a rain shower, and it kept working just fine.
Even better, you aren’t notified when your child arrives at or leaves a trusted place with you. After all, you don’t need a push notification to tell you that you just picked up your kid from school. But you do want a notification if she leaves school alone or with someone else. Trusted Places are easy to set up in the app, and you can choose to be notified when the tracker enters, leaves or both.
