The Best Android Phone Under $500

The BEST Value For Money Android Phone Ever.

If youre looking for the best sub-$500 Android phone, the Pixel 5A is your best bet.

The $449 Pixel 5A has a 6.34-inch OLED screen thats on the smaller side for the budget class, but its bigger than the previous-gen 6.2-inch panel on the Pixel 4A 5G. Theres a bigger battery, too: a 4,680mAh cell that will last through a full day of heavy use and well into day two if youre a lighter user. The 5A also offers IP67 water resistance for added peace of mind in the event of accidental spills or tumbles into water.

Thats more or less the extent of the 5As improvements over its predecessor. The 5As dual rear-facing cameras , Snapdragon 765G processor, as well as the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage combination, were inherited from the 4A 5G and still deliver solid performance in this iteration.

Software is another area where Pixel phones shine, and the 5A is no exception. It launched with Googles own Android 11 OS and has already gotten upgraded to Android 12. The software is refreshingly free of the added clutter that other manufacturers sometimes pile onto it. The Pixel 5A is also guaranteed three years of OS upgrades and security updates, which isnt quite as long as Apple or Samsungs standard software support timespan but is certainly better than a lot of the Android competition.

Theres also, of course, 5G connectivity. You wont get the super-fast mmWave flavor of 5G support, but you will be able to access the slower but more common, sub-6GHz 5G network.

Best Cheap Phones Extra Info

We’ve written this guide to encompass the best cheap phones on the market right now, but if you like a specific manufacturer or operating system then we have plenty of specialist phone guides here too.

For example, our best gaming phones guide covers the high-powered handsets that we’ve found to be the best battlers in mobile gaming, and our best Android phones guide isn’t going to offer you an iPhone if your heart is set on Android. If you prefer to buy a particular brand, check out our guides to the top-rated Samsung phones, best iPhone, and Nokia phones and many more. We’ve also got a guide to the best small phones for those of us who prefer our phones to fit in our pockets or purses.

You’ll find that most of the phones here are using 4G technology, not 5G. That’s unlikely to be an issue for most of the UK, where 5G is still relatively patchy, and 4G is fast enough for things like video streaming. However if you really want 5G speeds then check out our best 5G phones guide.

Best Budget Android Phones:

  • Lacks water resistance
  • Only available in one size option

Google didn’t change much about the Pixel 4a over its predecessor, the Pixel 3a. It kept the plastic body, the austere design, and the no-nonsense approach to Android. But what it did change, it improved on a wide scale: it’s faster, has more RAM and memory, a nicer display, and three additional years of Android platform and security updates to soothe even the most critical of users.

The Pixel 4a limits user choice, though: it only comes in in one storage variety, 128GB. Unfortunately, it’s also only available in one size, a 5.8-inch model that’s easy to hold and use in one hand.

Where the Pixel 4a excels is in the basics. Its 3,180mAh battery lasts all day, thanks to the power-sipping properties of its upgraded Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G processor. Its 5.8-inch OLED display goes edge-to-edge, with only the slightest hint of a bezel and a camera cutout near the top left. There’s only a single camera on the back, too, but that 12MP sensor combines with Google’s best-in-class post-processing for the best photos you’ll find in a phone at this price point. It’s so good. In fact, you’ll have a hard time telling the difference between photos produced on the Pixel 4a and those from the much more expensive Pixel 4.

Why Are You Including An Iphone In This List Of The Best Budget Android Phones

Here’s the thing: the iPhone obviously doesn’t run Android, but it runs Google’s apps extremely well. The iPhone SE may look like an iPhone from 2014, but it’s got the fundamentals that many people love, including a small footprint, a great camera , and Apple’s super-fast A13 chip. It also has access to the App Store, which is arguably better for many apps than Google’s Play Store, especially when it comes to mobile games.

While we absolutely don’t recommend you buy an iPhone SE if you’re truly set on getting one of the best budget Android phones, if you’re just in it for the Google apps support but want iMessage and Apple Arcade, for instance, the iPhone SE is a good option.

Best 5g Phone For Under $300

At $299, the OnePlus N10 5G brings 5G and some upscale features to a budget phone.

While you wont find a fantastic screen here, its large 6.46-inch LCD does come with a faster-than-average 90Hz refresh rate. Worth noting is the devices somewhat tall 20:9 aspect ratio, which is a little unusual at first glance but makes the phone slightly narrower and easier to use with one hand. Its processor is capable enough, though it sometimes shows its limits and only supports sub-6Hz 5G networks. It launched with Android 10, and

dont expect to get Android 12 on this model

OnePlus has released the update to Android 11 already. But thats it dont expect to get Android 12 on this model. OnePlus is offering two years of security updates in addition to that.

On the camera side, the N10 offers a 64-megapixel main camera thats surprisingly good in daylight and even moderately low light. Theres an 8-megapixel ultrawide, too, along with macro and monochrome cameras that arent really worth talking about. Its not Pixel 5A-level good, but if you dont push it too hard, the N10s main camera takes good photos in the right light.

How We Test Cheap Phones

We evaluate budget-priced phones the same way we do flagships. We perform real-world testing and synthetic benchmarks over several days to evaluate it’s performance and value. This includes our own battery test, which involves continuous web surfing over cellular at 150 nits of screen brightness. The devices that make our best phone battery life list tend to last over 11 hours.

In terms of performance, we use Geekbench 5 to measure overall speed and compare versus phones in the same price range. And the same thing goes for GFXBench for graphics testing. We also perform our own video editing/transcoding testing using the Adobe Premiere Rush app to gauge real-world speed.

For evaluating cameras on cheap phones, we will take multiple photos in different conditions and will use other affordably priced phones in the same scenarios in order to make side-by-side comparisons.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

Best Value Android Phone 2017 #2 (NOW $160)

The Nord N200 is missing some features that are standard in more expensive OnePlus phones. Theres no alert slider, which is one of our favorite features on the companys premium devices. The charging speed is also limited to 18 W instead of OPs faster Dash Charge speeds at up to 65 W. Still, 18 W is good for a budget phone, many of which top out at 10 W.

Theres a 13-megapixel primary camera on the back, paired with a 2-megapixel depth sensor and 2 megapixel macro camera. This allows OnePlus to market the phone as having a triple camera, but neither camera is good enough to actually be useful. The images from the primary camera are mediocre in most lighting conditions. Taking pictures of bouncy kids or pets can be frustrating. If you want a budget phone with a better camera, youll need to spring for the Pixel 4a.

While the Nord is available unlocked and its 4G LTE support will work on any carrier, its 5G connectivity is limited to T-Mobile. T-Mobile is promoting the phone heavily with sales that make it an even better deal, though.

Best For Samsung Fans: Samsung Galaxy A42 5g

The benefit of buying a budget phone from a big brand like Samsung is it has the resources to pass down premium components from higher-tier phones. Case in point the $280 Galaxy A42 5G has a large 6.6-inch AMOLED panel with the trademark vibrant, punchy colors Samsungs known for, and it managed to cram in a 48-megapixel main camera plus a sizable 5,000 mAh battery.

Theres a Snapdragon 750G that can handle 5G, plus all your daily tasks without issues, and while the 60Hz refresh rate is a tad disappointing, we cant complain too much at this price. Ultimately, the Galaxy A42 5G is for loyal Samsung fans who love either the Samsung brand or One UI but cant stomach paying over $1,000 for a Galaxy S or Note flagship.

The Best Cell Phone Signal Boosters You Can Buy

Reasons to avoid

If you need a signal booster in the first place, you’re probably not looking for a slightly better connection you need serious improvement, and not only in one room in your home. If that’s the case, the WeBoost Home MultiRoom is a good fit so good in fact, it was a winner the Tom’s Guide Ultimate Home Office Awards. WeBoost’s directional antenna design may make it a little more challenging to setup than a booster of the omnidirectional variety, but the tradeoff is an efficient, powerful signal with up to 65 dB in gain.

Like all WeBoost’s offerings, the Home MultiRoom package is designed to pull in bands from all networks Verizon, T-Mobile, AT& T, Sprint and even US Cellular on any carrier, whether you’re subscribed to one of those aforementioned providers or a virtual operator like Metro or StraightTalk that piggybacks off one of the major carrier’s towers. That’s great news if you see yourself changing carriers, or expect to get many years of use from the Home MultiRoom which you probably are, because, at $550, it’s far from the cheapest option.

Reasons to avoid

On the flip side, if you just need a little extra signal, the Fusion4Home could be helpful. Furthermore, it’s going for pretty steep discounts at the time of writing you can save as much as 40% off this model’s $450 list price on right now, making it an even more attractive choice.

A Big Phone With Lots Of Features

TCL 20S

One phone, so many features

Whether you want a vibrant display, lots of cameras, or Google Pay support on a budget? The TCL 20S does it all.

  • No NFC
  • Only one promised OS update

It can be challenging to keep track of all the value phones Motorola has in its lineup, but one that manages to stand out is the Moto G Stylus . Along with being one of the few Android phones that comes with a built-in stylus, it’s also just a perfect combination of specs, features, and value.

You’re getting a large 6.8-inch display for housing all of your media, and thanks to a Full HD+ resolution, everything looks excellent. There’s also ample performance thanks to the Snapdragon 678 processor, along with 128GB of built-in storage and a large 4,000 mAh battery. Given the low price of the G Stylus, these are all powerful specifications.

As the name implies, the main draw to the Moto G Stylus is its built-in stylus experience. It’s certainly not the most premium stylus we’ve ever used, but it works well enough for drawing, note-taking, etc. It can also be stored seamlessly at the bottom of the phone when you aren’t using it, which is a nice touch that ties the whole experience together.

Just like the Moto G Power , you’re still missing NFC on the Moto G Stylus and need to put up with Motorola’s disappointing software updates. However, if those aren’t deal-breakers for you, there’s a lot to like here.

Samsung packs quite a punch

Want a flagship Samsung phone without paying premium prices? Make sure to check out the Galaxy A52!

  • Can be a bit laggy with heavy use
  • “Fast” charging is only 15W

Samsung’s lineup of mid-tier Android phones has gotten a lot better in recent years, with one of the latest examples being the Galaxy A32 5G. This is at the mid-range of Samsung’s more affordable Galaxy phones, and it should absolutely be on your shortlist.

As hinted at above, this is the cheap Android phone to get if you care about cameras. The heart of the Galaxy A32 5G is its 48MP primary camera, and photos taken with it look excellent. There’s a lot of detail, good dynamic range, and vibrant colors. To help expand the types of pictures you can take, the A32 5G is also equipped with an 8MP wide-angle camera, a 5MP macro camera, and a 5MP portrait camera.

Outside of the camera department, the Galaxy A32 5G is just as impressive. It delivers a quality 6.4-inch TFT display at 720p, decent performance in day-to-day tasks thanks to its MediaTek MT6853 Dimensity 720 5G, and a beefy 5,000 mAh battery that allows long endurance. Tie all of that together with USB-C charging and a headphone jack, and you end up with quite the package.

Why Iphones Are Better Than Androids 2020

Apples closed ecosystem makes for a tighter integration, which is why iPhones dont need super powerful specs to match the high-end Android phones. Its all in the optimization between hardware and software. Since Apple controls production from beginning to end, it can make sure resources are used more efficiently.
