How to Accept Apple Pay and Android Pay with the NEW Square Reader

While using Android pay, the credit card number isnt used. A virtual account number is used instead. This is meant to keep your card details secure since youre not using any personal information. Additionally, as soon as you make a transaction, youll receive a confirmation that includes information like where the transaction occurred and the merchants name and number. If there is any suscoois activity, youll catch it immediately.

If your device ever gets lost or stolen, you can use the Android Device Manager to to either lock your device, create a new password, or wipe it completely clean.

The Bottom Line

Android Pay is a fast and secure mobile payment system that can be used on a wide variety of smartphones.

Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method

In EMV-mode transactions, Apple Pay supports the use of the Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method using Touch ID, Face ID, or the phone’s or watch’s passcode. The use of CDCVM allows for the device itself to provide verification for the transaction and may not require the cardholder to sign a receipt or enter their PIN. Additionally, in certain markets which have a ‘no verification contactless limit’ using contactless cards , the use of CDCVM can enable merchants to accept transactions higher than these amounts using Apple Pay, providing their terminal software is updated to support the latest network contactless specifications.

How Do Apple And Google Payments Work

The process of tokenisation takes place between your mobile phone , your card scheme and your issuing bank. The token is generated by your card scheme and then during authorisation, it sends the real card number to your bank to process the payment.

Apple or Google will then send the details to the individuals card issuing bank. The bank then replaces the details with a series of randomly generated numbers which is then sent back to Apple or Google, preventing the details from being cloned by fraudsters.

Android Pay Vs Apple Pay: How About Security

Weve already talked a little about security, but lets go for a closer look. One of the key worries is whether the information thats transmitted from your phone actually contains any of your card data, encrypted or otherwise.

At I/O 2015 Google confirmed Android Pay does not transmit any of your actual data. Instead, theres an extra level of protection where Google creates a virtual card, meaning the transaction is always really between you and Google.

Both systems also welcome the use of fingerprint scanners as an extra level of device-side authentication. Apple had this from the launch of Apple Pay. And with system-level fingerprint scanner support in Android Marshmallow, itll be in Android Pay before it comes to the UK by the looks of things too.

Your purchases stay private. When you pay with a debit or credit card, Apple Pay doesnt keep transaction information that can be tied back to you. And when you use Apple Cash, information is stored only for troubleshooting, fraud prevention, and regulatory purposes.

Android Pay Vs Apple Pay: How Do They Work

As with so many new technologies today, the biggest worry about something like Apple Pay or Android Pay is security. Doubly so when there are potentially big sums of money to talk about .

Both systems appear to work in a similar way. They dont copy or emulate the signal used when you make a contactless payment with your debit card. Instead, they create a virtual card thats used to make the transaction, so that your actual bank details arent involved in the transaction. Of course, this is what makes the relationship between Google/Apple and the banks so important, since the interaction is quite different to the standard contactless approach.

You wont have to worry about this end of the deal too much, though. Youll simply register your card with Apple Pay or Android Pay, then use the system and the required amount will be removed from your account.

Both systems use NFC as their method of communication. This has been available in Android and Windows phones for years now, but Apple only added it to the iPhone range last year with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

NFC stands for Near-Field Communication and is a wireless communications standard that uses a specific chip inside a phone or tablet. Weve been waiting for years for services like these to essentially validate NFCs inclusion in phones, although NFC is also widely used to aid pairing in Bluetooth wireless audio devices such as headphones and speakers.

But back to the moneyRelated:

Android Pay Vs Apple Pay: Which Devices Can I Use

In typical Apple fashion, though, Apple Pay is very restrictive about the phones than can use its Pay service. However, its purely a technical issue.

NFC is needed and thats only found in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and the newly launched iPhone SE. Earlier models just dont have the chip required.

A teardown of the iPad Air 2 revealed it has an NFC chip, but doesnt have the periphery antennas or boosters needed to make the chip work properly. Apples own documentation shows that iPads are designed to work with in-app Apple Pay only, not the version used in stores on the high street.

On the Android side, things are much more open. An Android device simply needs to have NFC and run Android 4.4 KitKat or newer. That green-lights an awful lot of devices, including budget phones and tablets like the Nexus 7. Whether youd want to use a tablet to pay for things is another matter. But, hey, people use them as cameras already.

We are now accepting Apple Pay and Android Pay.

Question: How Do I Accept Apple Pay Cash On Android Phone

Unlike its competitors, Apple Pay Cash doesnt work on Android devices. However, you can send payments using the service via an iPhone, iPad, or an Apple Watch. Apple said in a tweet that it would roll out Apple Pay Cash to iPhone users over this week. We could use it on Monday, but its not available to everyone yet.

Android Pay Vs Apple Pay: Which Shops Accept Them

Where Apple Pay and Android Pay can actually be used is limited by the country you reside in. However, the most recent official figures say that both systems can be used in over 700,000 stores in the US. In the UK it is supported everywhere that contactless payments are, including throughout the London Underground.

This is pretty telling: it looks like Apple has done most of the groundwork, then Google has come in and done deals with a lot of the same companies. As the systems appear to use similar tech, it looks as though itd simply require the signing of another contract, not loads of back-end work.

Android Pay also puts a bit more emphasis on payments made online as well as in-store, though. Thats because it has had its own online payments system for quite a while now, called Google Wallet.

Android Pay is really a development and branching out of this service, which launched four years earlier without much success. Here are some other services Google has confirmed as accepting Android Pay:

  • Uber
  • Travelocity
  • Expedia

In these cases, the option to buy something using Android Pay will be built into the respective app, removing the need to save your card details within the browser or type them out laboriously.

Youll be able to make similar in-app payments with Apple Pay too. In many respects they are very similar.

If youve ever run out of the house with your iPhone, but left your wallet or purse behind, you know how annoying it is to turn around and go back to get it. If you use Apple Pay, you dont have to.

The problem then is, how do you know who accepts Apple Pay? If youre just out to get a quick bite to eat or some groceries, you dont want to go from place to place asking them if they accept Apple Pay, so there has to be a better way, and luckily there is.

With a simple search in Apple Maps, you can see exactly who accepts Apple Pay, letting you instantly narrow down your options.

Using your iPhone, open the Maps app and look up the location you want to visit. For example, lets say weve got a hankering for some doughnuts. One nearby option is Dunkin Donuts, which we pull up on our Maps application, then we tap on that location to view its details.

You could go through Maps this way, tapping every location that interests you and see if the logo is there, but perhaps an easier way is to simply search in Apple Maps with the term Apple Pay. This then will display various locations throughout your area that accept it.

When you first open Pay Finders, you might be overwhelmed a bit by all the locations it shows that do accept Apple Pay.

More About Mobile Payments

But even though we have Google Wallet, Apple Pay and, soon, Samsung Pay, there are still many phones lacking NFC and the other internal tech that makes mobile payments possible. If that’s the case with your smartphone, you don’t need to upgrade to make payments on the fly. I’ve rounded up three lower-tech apps can still help you foot the bill.
