What Is Google Pay Banks And Phones That Accept It

You might have noticed a change in the way people are paying at stores lately. Instead of swiping or dipping credit cards, theyre holding their mobile device over the POS terminal. This type of payment, called a contactless or NFC payment, uses near field communication to transmit information from a mobile device to a payments reader.

In addition to EMV chip cards, NFC mobile payments are part of our charge toward more secure, authenticated ways to pay. As opposed to magstripe cards , NFC payments have multiple layers of security involved in the transaction, designed to protect bank details. NFC mobile payments are also the fastest way to pay. The transaction time is super fast, unlike credit card transactions, which can take several seconds .

Google Pay is Googles mobile wallet technology and one of the more popular NFC mobile payment apps.

Iphone Vs Android: Why Android Is Better

There are phones at every price. The vast majority of the world’s smartphones run Android, and because so many companies build Android handsets, they’re available at every price range. There are cheap phones under the three-digit mark like the new Pixel 5a, as well as some of the best small phones and best big phones, and phablets and foldables far exceeding $1,000. No matter how much you can spend, chances are you can find an Android device that fits your budget or offers exclusive features.

The same cannot be said for iPhones, which historically have been expensive at launch, only to come down in price after successive generations. One of the most affordable new Apple handsets is the iPhone 13 mini for $699, but that comes with a small 5.4-inch display. The Galaxy S20 FE has the same price but comes with a bigger and smoother 120Hz 6.5-inch screen, a telephoto lens and a much larger battery.

The least-expensive iPhone that Apple offers is the iPhone SE, which is a fantastic device with phenomenal performance for just $400, though its design is dated, and its screen will be too small for some.

Android also lets you download third-party replacements for core services like web browsers, keyboards and media players and set them as the default versions if you prefer a third-party app to one that was preinstalled on your phone. iOS has improved in this regard over the years, though the implementation is still somewhat clunky.

    Are Mobile Wallets Secure

Yes, storing a credit card on your phone is safe. In fact, its one of the most secure ways to pay. Phone payment apps use the same security technology as contactless credit cards , and pay-with-phone transactions use tokenization to mask your actual credit card number during the transaction and protect your card information from being stolen.

Mobile wallets also let you add multiple credit cards on your phone, which is good for people who want to maximize their credit card rewards by using different cards at different retailers. You can even use contactless payments on some bus and subway systems. Just tap your smartphone to the turnstile, and the credit card on your phone will take care of the rest.

But what do you need to do before youre ready to make credit card payments with your phone?

Android Pay Vs Apple Pay: Which Devices Can I Use

In typical Apple fashion, though, Apple Pay is very restrictive about the phones than can use its Pay service. However, its purely a technical issue.

NFC is needed and thats only found in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and the newly launched iPhone SE. Earlier models just dont have the chip required.

A teardown of the iPad Air 2 revealed it has an NFC chip, but doesnt have the periphery antennas or boosters needed to make the chip work properly. Apples own documentation shows that iPads are designed to work with in-app Apple Pay only, not the version used in stores on the high street.

On the Android side, things are much more open. An Android device simply needs to have NFC and run Android 4.4 KitKat or newer. That green-lights an awful lot of devices, including budget phones and tablets like the Nexus 7. Whether youd want to use a tablet to pay for things is another matter. But, hey, people use them as cameras already.

Iphone Vs Android: Why Iphone Is Better

Apple Pay vs. Samsung Pay vs. Google Pay: Which is best?

You’re invested in Apple’s ecosystem. This might seem like a shallow reason, but Apple obviously makes a wide breadth of tech products, and if you already own a Mac, iPad or Apple Watch, getting an iPhone makes a lot of sense.

Apple has designed a multitude of continuity features that allow you to carry over work and data from one of its devices to another, and these features can certainly save you time. Take Handoff, for example, where calls on your iPhone and web pages in Safari can move seamlessly between iOS and macOS. Universal Clipboard makes text copied on one platform usable on the other. Another one of our favorites is Continuity Camera, which allows you to take pictures and scan documents using your iPhone’s camera, and then view and edit them on your Mac. You can even complete purchases on your Mac by using biometric authentication features on your iPhone via Apple Pay.

Only a handful of Android phone makers have hardware ecosystems that approach Apple’s, and even for some that come close, like Samsung, you won’t get the depth of integration possible between the iPhone and other Apple-built devices. Microsoft is helping Google close the gap somewhat with its new Your Phone app for Windows, which allows Android users to respond to texts and notifications on their PCs, though the experience is a little clunky and there is still work to be done.

    How Secure Is Apple Pay

Apple Pay is safer than using a physical credit, debit, or prepaid card. Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode are required for purchases on your iPhone, Apple Watch, Mac, or iPad. Your card number and identity arent shared with merchants, and your actual card numbers arent stored on your device or on Apple servers.

When you pay in stores, neither Apple nor your device will send your actual card number to merchants. When you pay online in Safari or in apps, the merchant will only receive information you authorize to fulfill your order such as your name, email address, and billing and shipping addresses.

When you pay with a debit or credit card, Apple doesnt keep transaction information that can be tied back to you. And when you use Apple Cash, information is stored only for troubleshooting, fraud prevention, and regulatory purposes.

Which States Use Vaccine Record Apps

While some governors have signed orders banning so-called “vaccine passports,” many other states have apps that allow residents to keep digital versions of their vaccine cards on their phones. More than a dozen — including California, Colorado, Hawaii, New York and Louisiana — offer SMART Health Cards that store vaccination records and COVID-19 test results.

Colorado residents, for example, can download the myColorado app: After you verify your identity and add a digital version of your driver’s license to your phone, you can add your myVaccine record to the app.

Louisiana’s LA Wallet app takes a similar approach, allowing you to add both your driver’s license and proof of vaccination to your phone, while Illinois residents can use VaxVerify, which uses Experian for identity verification.

New Yorkers have two app options, The Excelsior Pass and NYC Covid Safe, while New Jersey and Utah rely on the Docket app, available in the Apple Store or Google Play.

California requires residents to fill out a form to verify their identity, after which they’ll receive a text or email with a link to a QR code that can be saved to their phone. When scanned, the code provides proof of vaccination.

MyIR Mobile is used by several state health departments, including Arizona, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Dakota and West Virginia. Alaska announced last spring it would be partnering with MyIRMobile on an app, but it’s still not active according to the company website.

    Express Transit Or Express Travel

Since iOS 12.3, supported credit and debit cards, as well as some stored-value transport cards can be used to pay for journeys on certain public transport networks without requiring the user to authenticate the payment with Touch ID or Face ID. Once a supported credit, debit or transit card is selected as a user’s Express Transit/Travel card, the user can simply hold their device near the card reader, for example at ticket barriers, to initiate or authorise payment for the journey.

Within iOS, the functionality is labelled as “Express Transit” in North America and “Express Travel” in most other English-speaking countries, because “transit” in most varieties of English has a narrower meaning of travelling through a jurisdiction or airport during a journey as opposed to travel or transport in general.

On iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and later, Express Transit/Travel cards can be used up to five hours on Power Reserve after the device has powered off due to a drained battery. The typical low-battery icon will display with “Express Cards Available” text appearing at the bottom of the display, letting users know that Express Transit/Travel is still available for usage.

(Express Mode more generally is also available for contactless student ID cards stored in the Wallet app as well as digital car keys.

    What Is Apple Pay

Apple Pay was first announced by company CEO Tim Cook as part of its iPhone 6 press event in September 2014. The service itself didnt launch until October, with the iOS 8.1 update, and only worked at first on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Later, the service expanded, in terms of native hardware support, to the first generation Apple Watch, and has since been included out of the box for all of the new iPhones, Apple Watches and recent editions of the companys MacBook Pro laptop that use Touch ID. Apple Pay is also available on the companys iPads, but only via an app, with no native hardware support. Owners of the companys Mac PC products can also access it, via the Safari web browser.

    Pros

Because it got started first, in 2013, Apple got a head start on its two biggest rivals in terms of adding banks, retailers and country support for Apple Pay. Currently, the service is supported in over 20 countries and territories. making it the most widely supported mobile payment service. In a recent presentation during the Money20/20 business event in Las Vegas event, current Apple Pay head Jennifer Bailey said that just the United States, where it first launched in October 2014, Apple Pay support has expanded to over 50 percent of all retailers. All of the major banks in the US support Apple Pay for their credit and debit cards, and the number of smaller banks and credit unions that support the service also continues to grow.
