Android Pay Vs Apple Pay: Which Devices Can I Use

Square Announces New Square Reader for Apple Pay ...

In typical Apple fashion, though, Apple Pay is very restrictive about the phones than can use its Pay service. However, its purely a technical issue.

NFC is needed and thats only found in the iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, the iPhone 6S and 6S Plus, and the newly launched iPhone SE. Earlier models just dont have the chip required.

A teardown of the iPad Air 2 revealed it has an NFC chip, but doesnt have the periphery antennas or boosters needed to make the chip work properly. Apples own documentation shows that iPads are designed to work with in-app Apple Pay only, not the version used in stores on the high street.

On the Android side, things are much more open. An Android device simply needs to have NFC and run Android 4.4 KitKat or newer. That green-lights an awful lot of devices, including budget phones and tablets like the Nexus 7. Whether youd want to use a tablet to pay for things is another matter. But, hey, people use them as cameras already.

    What Is Apple Pay

Apple Pay was first announced by company CEO Tim Cook as part of its iPhone 6 press event in September 2014. The service itself didnt launch until October, with the iOS 8.1 update, and only worked at first on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Later, the service expanded, in terms of native hardware support, to the first generation Apple Watch, and has since been included out of the box for all of the new iPhones, Apple Watches and recent editions of the companys MacBook Pro laptop that use Touch ID. Apple Pay is also available on the companys iPads, but only via an app, with no native hardware support. Owners of the companys Mac PC products can also access it, via the Safari web browser.

    Pros

Because it got started first, in 2013, Apple got a head start on its two biggest rivals in terms of adding banks, retailers and country support for Apple Pay. Currently, the service is supported in over 20 countries and territories. making it the most widely supported mobile payment service. In a recent presentation during the Money20/20 business event in Las Vegas event, current Apple Pay head Jennifer Bailey said that just the United States, where it first launched in October 2014, Apple Pay support has expanded to over 50 percent of all retailers. All of the major banks in the US support Apple Pay for their credit and debit cards, and the number of smaller banks and credit unions that support the service also continues to grow.

    Cons

Can You Get Scammed On Apple Pay

The way you can get scammed with Apple Pay is the same as you could get scammed while using any other payment system. Scammers make you transfer your money via Apple Pay to appear as if it was your own choice. A cybercriminal will use social engineering to pretend to be your friend or a family member asking for money.

The Physical Card Is Meaningless On Its Own

How does the physical Apple Card fit in? Great question. Apple also gives you a physical card with your name engraved on a titanium rectangle and that’s it — no numbers, no expiration date, no CVV , no other identifying details that would allow someone to commit fraud against you if they see your card or take it from you.

You’ll use the physical Apple Card like any other payment card that has a magnetic stripe and a chip. If you need to access those details like the expiration date and CVV digits, you’ll fire up the iPhone’s Wallet app to take a peek. Another reason not to lose your iPhone.

The titanium card isn’t meant to be used as your primary way to pay. It’s a fallback that exists because not all point-of-sale terminals accept Apple Pay. Contrast that with Samsung Pay, which can also work like your credit card’s magnetic stripe. However, in making the card look so iconically Apple, the company geniusly turned a negative — Apple Pay doesn’t work at every payment terminal — into a coveted status symbol by creating a product that people will instantly recognize. A titanium card is the Apple Card. But it won’t work without your iPhone.

A physical Apple Card is a workaround because Apple Pay isn’t everywhere. Apple is also adding value by giving subscribers a way to flaunt their status with an instantly recognizable titanium card. It’s genuis, really #AppleCard#AppleEvent

Apple Card = Iphone 4 Lyfe

The iPhone is fundamental to the inner workings of the Apple Card itself.

Most of the Apple Card’s functionality lives in the digital Wallet app on your iPhone. This involves more than tracking your balance and paying off your card online. The Apple Card relies on the Secure Element chip in your iPhone to process transactions with each purchase, which means you have to have one if you want to use the credit card.

You also need the Wallet app to monitor your account — remember, this data is calculated on your device, not online, so you can’t just look up your account details from a browser window on your desktop or in a separate app like you would with your usual bank. Apple thinks this will safeguard you from hacks because the details of your digital transactions are computed on your phone. No iPhone, no Apple Card.

You track your Apple Card account maintenance on the phone, not online.

      Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method

How To Pay With Your Android Phone

In EMV-mode transactions, Apple Pay supports the use of the Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method using Touch ID, Face ID, or the phone’s or watch’s passcode. The use of CDCVM allows for the device itself to provide verification for the transaction and may not require the cardholder to sign a receipt or enter their PIN. Additionally, in certain markets which have a ‘no verification contactless limit’ using contactless cards , the use of CDCVM can enable merchants to accept transactions higher than these amounts using Apple Pay, providing their terminal software is updated to support the latest network contactless specifications.

Personal data. Protected. When you make a purchase, Apple Pay uses a device-specific number and unique transaction code. So your card number is never stored on your device or on Apple servers. And when you pay, your card numbers are never shared by Apple with merchants.

Your purchases stay private. When you pay with a debit or credit card, Apple Pay doesnt keep transaction information that can be tied back to you. And when you use Apple Cash, information is stored only for troubleshooting, fraud prevention, and regulatory purposes.

Tap more. Touch less. Apple Pay works right from your device, helping you avoid touching buttons and terminals, handling cards, and exchanging cash. So you keep your hands clean and are less likely to pick up and spread germs.
