Use Apps For Other Platforms Too

Some examples include Microsoft Family Safety and Nintendo Switchs parental control app. Both apps serve mostly the same function. Microsofts solution lets you monitor your childs Xbox and Windows PC usage and limit various things. Meanwhile, Nintendos solution lets you monitor screen time and what games your kids play. There arent a ton of these types of apps, but if you can find one, we recommend it for use on other platforms besides Android.

To restore this ability, you must unlock your screen orientationopen Settings, go to Display, Advanced, and change the Auto-rotate screen option.

Add A Restricted Profile/child Mode

Almost all Android phones let you add a new user to your device, and as the admin, you can choose to add a new user with a restricted profile or on child mode. This is useful if youre handing your phone over for your child to play with. You can also set up a restricted profile for your child on their own phone. Heres how to get started:

  • Find and click the Settings icon.

  • Choose Users and accounts.

  • Select the option to create a Restricted profile.

  • Choose a security login option, like a PIN, for the new profile.

  • You now have the option to choose which apps this new profile can access. Toggle the option to OFF for any apps youd prefer your kid not to use.

    Track Phone Usage And Location

Even though restrictions have been put on phone content and screen time, you still need to track what they are doing on the phone. What types of apps they are using, and if they have installed any new app, you disapprove.

On the same profile page, tap on More under the App activity section. You will see a list of all the apps with recently used apps listed at the top. Below each app, the total usage time is mentioned.

There is also a bar chart at the top that shows the childs phone activity on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis.

If you want to see the newly installed apps, go back to the main profile page again and scroll down until you reach app installs section. Here you will see all the newly installed apps.

You can also track the location of your childs phone. Although, think of it as more of an extra benefit rather than controlling your childs phone activity. You can see the exact location of your childs phone to track your childs location .

To do so, scroll down on the main profile page until you reach the location section. If the location tracking is enabled on the childs phone, you should see their exact location on a map with the address at the bottom. There are buttons to add labels to the location, get directions to it in the Maps app, and refresh to get the latest location.

Your Kid’s Android Screen Time Is Out Of Control Here’s How To Rein It In

Google’s Family Link app provides in-depth information about kids’ usage and location and lets you set limits.

Family Link is an easy way to keep tabs on your kids’ screen time.

Over the last few weeks, I think it’s fair to say we parents have all loosened our screen time limits for our kids. With most of us under stay-at-home orders and with school canceled, letting the kids use phones and tablets more than usual has become the new norm. But, it’s still a good idea to know what they’re doing. Family Link makes parental controls on Android devices a breeze. Seriously, I wish Apple’s Screen Time was this easy and flexible.

If you have children under the age of 13, you’re in near-complete control of their Android phones through Family Link. For kids over the age of 13, you still have controls, but they can disable the feature on their own .

Using an app like Family Link will help you slowly rein in their screen time to specific apps, or for the device overall. Here’s what you need to know to get started.

Project Your Phone On A Bigger Screen

Setting up an Android child device

Android now comes with built-in casting, so you can mirror the screen on any monitor or television equipped with a Chromecast device. Although many apps have their own Chromecast buttons, you can also project any screen or app from the Settings. Just go to Connected devices and select Cast. If you do this often, Android 11 also allows you to create a shortcut in the Quick Setting menu. Go to tip number 3 and drag the icon for Screen Cast to the top.

    Tweak The Color Range

A phones color gamut controls the range of colors that you see on screena wider gamut means colors will appear more vibrant, but also less natural. You can adjust the gamut in Settings by going to Display, Advanced choosing Colors, and choosing Natural, Boosted, or Adaptive. Depending on the make and model of your phone, you may see different options listed here. Play around with them to find the color scheme that works best for you.

Unlock Your Phone In Your Car

Once youre securely seated in your car, you might want your phone to unlock itself. This would let you open a map without entering a code, and would allow any passengers to put on your favorite tunes. Android can do this by recognizing your car stereo as a trusted Bluetooth device, one that proves youre in possession of your phone. From Settings, head to Security, then Smart Lock, then Trusted devices. Finally, work through the simple setup process, and then your phone will unlock when its in the presence of your car stereo.

Creating Multiple Users On Your Android

If your device supports multiple user profiles, this is an efficient method for restricting what your child can and cant do. If more than one child uses your device , you can create and define a profile for each one. Heres how:

    • Go to Settings
    • Scroll to and tap Users
    • Choose Add user or profile
    • In the ensuing dialog window, tap Restricted Profile

Android displays a screen that allows you to switch access on or off to nearly everything on the device, including Chrome and the Google Search app. By default, most options are turned off.

Go through the list and switch on the content and apps you want to allow note that several have a Settings gear icon beside them that, by clicking it, lets you tailor content further, through mostly age-based settings, as shown in the image below.

Video and TV apps, for example, let you restrict content using traditional ratings, such as, say, PG or PG-13. Also, make sure that you turn off Allow unrated content.

You can also restrict each user from making calls or sending texts and emails. Keep in mind, too, that for each new app you install or content you download for the children in the future, youll need to come back here and allow access.

You can switch back and forth between users from Notifications pull-down, like this:

    • From the top of any Home screen, the lock screen, and many app screens, swipe down with two fingers to reveal Quick Settings.
    • Tap Switch user
    • Tap a different user. That user can now sign in.

    Create A Childs Google Account

How to put parental controls on your childâs Android phone

The first thing you need to do is create a dedicated Google account for your child, which will be under your supervision. This special account will have child-safety restrictions by default, and you can control its activity remotely. Heres how to create one:

If its a new phone, then Google will ask you to create a Google account on startup. You can go to Settings > Account & Sync > Accounts and select Google to create a new Google account for old phones.

Here select Create account option and select For my child from the drop-down menu.

Google will ask for the regular account creation details, like standard accounts, including name, date of birth and username, etc.

Provide the required information and sign in with your personal Google account to authorize the child account creation.

Once done, Google will recommend you to download the app on your phone and Family Link Child app on the childs phone. Its a parental control app by Google that is entirely free to use, so make sure you allow the app to download as we will be using it to complete all the tasks.

If the automatic download doesnt work, you can always manually download the parent and child app from the links I provided above.

    Add Important And Emergency Numbers

Phones help parents and kids stay in touch and coordinate pick up and drop off at school and activities. Phones can also give parents peace of mind as an emergency contact point for kids.

After youve reset your hand-me-down phone, or once youve removed your kids new phone from the box, be sure to enter any and all important phone numbers you want your child to have. Many parents get their child a phone as an emergency phone for that child.

    Set Up Additional Security

Safe Kids provides comprehensive parental control, including protection against its own deletion, and the recent update has brought one more useful feature restricting access to smartphones own settings. Its worth doing to make sure your child will not be able to connect to unknown Wi-Fi networks, reset the system time, or mess with settings in some other way you didnt predict.

I personally used to recommend an app called Smart Applock for that purpose, but now that Safe Kids has this feature I suggest using it and not installing additional software to execute this task.

One last setting: the lock screen. Enable a lock screen to protect the smartphone from classmates and others who might find it. You can do that through Settings Security or Settings Lock screen. Work with your child to ensure he or she is comfortable entering the PIN or pattern that unlocks the phone. Also, set the lock screen to display a simple contact message or just your phone number in case it goes missing and a stranger finds it.

Software and settings arent a substitute for ongoing parental guidance. Get involved with your childs smartphone usage. Talk about surfing, gaming restrictions, and all that, but expect that your child will find ways around your smartphone usage plan and adapt as needed.

    Using Youtube Kids Responsibly

YouTube gives your kids unfiltered access to everything that exists on YouTube. Some adults don’t want that, much less making it available to children. To address this, Google made YouTube Kids. It’s a separate app to watching videos that Google has approved as child-friendly. It’s a free app and all ads are removed from the videos your child has access to, creating some relative safety for your child to explore YouTube.

Like anything that promises to be “kid safe” there’s a good chance your definition of appropriate doesn’t 100% line up with Google’s. On top of that, sometimes things slip through Google’s filters and are less than “kid safe” in practice. YouTube kids does a decent job filtering out the worst of YouTube, but this is not Disney Channel. You’re going to want to know what your kid is watching and keep an eye out for videos that could be problematic.

If you want to restrict this version of YouTube down even further, you can do so with Family Link.

    What Does It Do

How to Track and Control Your Child Android Device With Google Family Link

    Set Up Google Accounts

Using an Android smartphone requires a Google account, but the terms and conditions stipulate that only a person who is 13 or older can create an account. If you dont already have a second account that you can use for this purpose, youll have to create one.

The child does not need to know the password for their new account, and enabling two-factor authentication for it is advisable. Needless to say, the authentication should be linked to your smartphone, not to your childs.

Note: You can create an account for your child on devices running Android 7.0 and above by using the Family Link feature, but it is currently available only in the United States.

Now, power up the smartphone, add your existing Google account information in the setup wizard, enter your desired e-mail address and other data, enter your age and your phone number, and accept the terms and conditions.

If it is not the first time youre starting up the smartphone, you set up the new account here: Settings Accounts Add accounts Google. In the new window, tap Or create a new account.

At this point, skip entering payment details for the Google Play store. Ill come back to that issue a bit later, but for now Ill say that payment information should be linked to an adults account.

Creating A New Account With Family Link

You used to have to jump through hoops and sort of lie to Google about your kid’s age if you wanted someone under 13 to have their own Google account, but nowadays we have Family Link. Through this app, you can create a kid-focused account for your child with lots of protections and features for parents to keep an eye on how gadgets are being used.

Step one for any kid having their own Android phone or tablet needs to be having a Family Link account, which you create by installing the Family Link app on your phone.

Family Link accounts are different from normal Google accounts. You create them from an app on your phone, and then the Family Link app walks you through setting that account up on the phone or tablet you want your child to use. As you log in to this account, Family Link lets you choose which apps your child has access to, and lets you set up a service that tells you what apps your child uses most throughout the week.

If you choose to allow it, this Family Link account has access to all of the basic Google apps and services. You can set up Gmail, messenger, Chrome, Google Drive, and more. There’s a lot of flexibility here, but it can take up to 25 minutes to go from creating the account to fully setting up your child’s device to suit your needs.

Restrict Apps And Google Play Store Content

The Google Play store is the gateway to all of your kids favorite apps and games. Thankfully, Google Plays parental controls let you set some rules and restrict apps on Android devices. Heres how to access and adjust those settings:

  • To get started, find and open the Google Play app.

  • Once open, tap the hamburger menu to open the menu.

  • Choose Settings from the menu.

  • Choose Parental controls from the next menu page. Toggle on to activate.

  • After activating, youll be prompted to set a PIN. Youll need this PIN to change any parental control settings in the future, so be sure to choose something you can remember.

  • After setting your PIN, you can apply content restrictions for apps, games, movies, TV, and so on.

  • These restrictions let you choose the content your child can download based on audience ratings. For example, for apps and games, you can uncheck the boxes for Mature 17+ and Adults only 18+ to make sure theyre not exposed to explicit content.
