Parental controls are essential for you to ensure you know exactly what your kid is watching and when theyre watching it. With these controls on your Android TV, you can easily set them up to limit your childrens access.

Its good to have a bit of control over what your kids are exposed to, which is why parental controls are somewhat necessary. Setting up these controls may sound a little tricky, but its quite easy. Heres how to get it set up and how to use them.

Why Set Up Parental Controls For Your Child

A child being glued to a phone or tab is the last thing a parent would want as they are neither being physically active nor is it engaging the brain. Nothing they can do online is a replacement for real-life sports and activities that instill cognitive growth and good health in your child.

Apart from attending online classes and going through educational research, they are far more active in internet surfing, social media, watching videos on Youtube, playing games, etc.

In the course of browsing, your kids might encounter adult content that is inappropriate for their age, and they might even make in-app purchases of some games or videos, giving you a headache and credit card bills. These are known and common issues of every other family with a growing child in this technology-driven world.

The primary advantage of using parental controls is restricting screen time, which is good for your childs physical and mental well-being.

When you set up parental controls on your childs device to restrict screen time and limit online activity, they wont be able to go through adult-sensitive content and they will be protected from straining their eyes which, over prolonged hours, can build up into serious health issues like Hypermetropia.

You can restrict access to some of the websites or set ground rules that block content that is inappropriate for their age. You can supervise their social media activities and get history on what they did on their android devices all day.

How To Set Up Tiktok Parental Controls

Tiktok has a few inbuilt features in the application that you can enable to protect your child from inappropriate and explicit content and limit his/her browsing activity. Furthermore, the recently added Family Pairing mode widens your grasp over your kids interactions on the app.

Family Pairing enables you, parents, to restrict screen time, manage direct messaging settings, and filter the type of content their child can see on the app.

Restrict Apps And Google Play Store Content

The Google Play store is the gateway to all of your kids favorite apps and games. Thankfully, Google Plays parental controls let you set some rules and restrict apps on Android devices. Heres how to access and adjust those settings:

  • To get started, find and open the Google Play app.

  • Once open, tap the hamburger menu to open the menu.

  • Choose Settings from the menu.

  • Choose Parental controls from the next menu page. Toggle on to activate.

  • After activating, youll be prompted to set a PIN. Youll need this PIN to change any parental control settings in the future, so be sure to choose something you can remember.

  • After setting your PIN, you can apply content restrictions for apps, games, movies, TV, and so on.

  • These restrictions let you choose the content your child can download based on audience ratings. For example, for apps and games, you can uncheck the boxes for Mature 17+ and Adults only 18+ to make sure theyre not exposed to explicit content.

How Do I Get Parental Control Off My Phone

Many parents are concerned about how much screen time they should allow. Often, its the only issue that bothers adults, and they completely forget about other dangers of kids getting an unlimited access to the Internet.

If parents neglect setting Android parental controls, children can run into inappropriate content and see something they shouldnt. It can be adult-oriented sites, violent videos, or online chatting apps for those over 18.

Kids can also get access to matchmaking apps or chatting sites for adults, where they can talk to strangers without limitations. This can lead to befriending online predators or becoming a target for scammers.

Android cell phones are known to be fragile in terms of security. For instance, the overall number of new malware attacks counted about 482,579 per month in March 2020. Thousands of users became victims of stealing their credit card details and identities.

On top of that, using an Android cell phone without parental controls can impose a child to the danger of being cyberbullied. If humiliation from online bullies becomes too personal, a victim can start suffering from various psychological disorders, such as depression or low self-esteem leading to poor academic performance and problems with socialization.

    Leaves room for improvement

    Reasons to avoid

ESET Parental Control for Android sticks to a single platform, but it doesn’t shine even there, lacking text-message- and call-monitoring features and implementing clunky controls on what it does have.

The app management and time management you receive with the free version of ESET Parental Control for Android do work well, as do the location tracking and geofencing you’ll get if you pay for a subscription. And we liked the feature that lets a kid send an SOS message to designated phones with a single tap.

Still, the $30 yearly plan is not worth shelling out for unless you get it bundled with ESET Smart Security Premium. That’s because Kaspersky Safe Kids does more than ESET Parental Control for Android on four times as many platforms and at half the price.

    Reasons to avoid

MMGuardian has nearly every parental-control feature you might want on Android phones, including the ability to log, block and read text messages, and log and block calls.

It’s also the only app we know of that can still read texts and messages on iOS, although it can’t block them, thanks to Mac and PC software that combs through an iPhone’s backups.

But the user interfaces are outdated and frustrating on both platforms. The iOS and Android smartphone apps offer location tracking and excellent web filtering, and MMGuardian now has an artificial-intelligence component to spot nudity in saved images.

How To Block Inappropriate Content On The Google Family Link App

The Family Link app DOES NOT allow parents to block all inappropriate content on their childrens phones. Only some apps have specific, child-safe filtering options. Search, and Chrome both have specific filtering options that can be accessed via Family Link. YouTube also offers a restricted mode.

This optional setting filters out all content that are rated mature or flagged as inappropriate. This mode uses automated filtering tools. These tools assess the videos title, language, metadata, etc., to deem it appropriate or inappropriate for children. The types of content blocked in YouTubes restricted mode include

Inflammatory or slanderous content directed towards individuals or groups. Profane and adult language. Videos containing racial slurs, swear words, etc. Depictions of violence, political conflicts, terrorism, war, crime, etc. Descriptions of violence, disturbing news reports, crime-related videos, etc. Sexual content . Drug, alcohol, or tobacco use .

Unfortunately, these filters dont work perfectly well. Many users have managed to access content from these purportedly blocked categories while using YouTubes restricted mode. This mode is also not customizable. For instance, if you dont want your child to view toy reviews that feature manipulative ads, you cant specifically set up such a filter.
