Whether youre planning a day out on the town, or want to orchestrate the perfect road trip across the country, Google Maps allows you to add up to nine stops, excluding your starting point, when you make directions from both the website and the Maps app. Heres how you do it.

Multiple Destinations Feature Spotted On Google Maps App

The inability to add stopovers is a significant shortcoming of the mobile app compared to Maps on the web.

UPDATE: Google confirmed that the multi-stop directions feature is now available on Android and coming soon to iOS.

ORIGINAL STORY: Some users of ‘ iOS and Android apps finally have access to a long-awaited feature: the ability to plan a trip with multiple destinations.

Previously only available on the full web version of Google Maps, the multiple destinations feature started to pop up on smartphones today, Android Police reported. The new feature appears to originate from an update to the maps server, since the Google Play Store shows that the last app update was a few days ago.

The web version of Google Maps lets you add additional destinations to your route by clicking on a plus icon below the address field. It’s available for biking, walking, and driving directions, though transit users are stuck plotting complicated routes one destination at a time.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on its plans to roll out the multiple destinations feature to the mobile app or whether it would support multiple transportation modes.

How To Add Multiple Destinations In Apple Maps On Iphone

Instead of programming your Apple Maps with multiple destinations, you will leverage the Pit Stop option to serve as an additional destination. To add a Pit Stop in the iPhone app, follow these steps:

  • Launch Apple Maps and input your destination.
  • Tap the blue Directions button, then Go. The app will present your route.
  • Swipe up the route card at the bottom of your iPhone screen.
  • Tap Add Stop and choose a category .
  • Your iPhone will offer you several stopover options. Unfortunately, you can only pick one from the list. Custom Pit Stops are not available in Apple Maps unless a future update introduces them.

You can also use Siri to add your Pit Stop instead of going through the above steps. Use this method while youre driving to stay safe:

  • Activate Siri by calling Hey Siri.
  • Pick your Pit Stop as Siri reads out the options. Decline an option by answering No, and accept it by answering Yes.
  • You can also remove your Pit Stop anytime by pressing the Resume Route option at the very top of your screen.

How To Add Multiple Destinations In Apple Maps

Most of us cannot imagine our lives without navigation apps like Apple Maps. To get directions to any location, all we have to do is input the destination, and were good to go. However, if you plan on hitting multiple destinations along the way, reprogramming the app every time can be bothersome.

If you use Apple Maps frequently, you may be looking for a way to add multiple destinations at once and save some time on route planning. To help you out, heres how to achieve this in several ways.

Introducing Circuit For Teams: More Than Just A Route Planner

We started Circuit Route Planner to help all drivers manage their routes better so they could finish faster, and our service quickly found a following with delivery businesses. So we developed it to help them.

By using advanced algorithms, Circuit for Teams can optimize routes across an entire fleet of delivery drivers. Many dispatchers currently use postcode-based route planning to manage multiple drivers. While this is sometimes necessary, most businesses can use their driving teams more efficiently with the fleet-level route optimization Circuit for Teams gives.

Once you have the optimized routes in hand, you can push them to your drivers. The routes will show up in the Circuit for Teams app on their phones, and they can use Google Maps to navigate easily from stop to stop.

Circuit for Teams also lets dispatchers know where each driver is in context with their route. If a customer calls to ask about an ETA, the dispatcher can confidently relay where that particular driver is and tell them when they can expect to get their package.

Note: Circuit for Teams also offers delivery updates for recipients, meaning your customers stay in the loop about the deliverys time of arrival without having to contact you.

Is There A Way To Add More Than 10 Stops On Google Maps

Unfortunately, Google Maps sets a hard limit on the number of stops you can enter into one route. You could open a new tab and start a new route from your last stop, but Google actually has an even better solution: My Maps.

This free tool is part of Googles Workspace tools and lets you create your own maps and share them with multiple users like a Google Doc. Although My Maps also has a stop limit of 10, you can create additional layers to keep your multi-stop route going.

    Heres how to do it:

  • Click Create A New Map.

  • Click the Add directions icon underneath the search bar.

  • Begin entering your destinations.

  • Once you reach the stop limit, click Add directions again to start a new layer.

You can create up to 10 layers on a single map, for a total of 100 stops.

  • Input the final stop from your previous layer and add new stops to keep your route going.

  • My Maps will automatically set the fastest route between destinations, but you can click and drag the route line to set a custom route.

How To Plan The Shortest Route For Multiple Destinations In Google Maps

Google Maps only plans 10 stops at once and wont optimize the order. Heres what you can do in Google Maps, plus how to optimize if you have hundreds of stops.

Google Maps helps drivers get from point A to point B, and it comes with some great user-friendly features. Looking up your destination is a breeze, and you can choose whether youre biking, driving or taking public transport.

Plus, Google Maps is quick to reroute based on real-time information, factoring in time-drainers such as traffic delays and accidents. But if youre a professional driver using Google Maps to plan a route with multiple destinations, there are two things to keep in mind:

  • Google Maps limits the number of stops you can add to your trip.
  • Google Maps actually has zero route optimization features, meaning you have to do all the calculations manually when you have multiple stops to make.
  • If youre using Google Maps to get driving directions to run personal errands or plan a short road trip, you can make it work for you with minimal headaches . But if youre a professional courier, a small business offering local delivery, or a delivery company with a full fleet, these limitations mean youll need something more robust.

Helping drivers plan the fastest route with multiple destinations was the main reason we built Circuit. And while the services we offer have expanded since then, its still our main feature.

Once youve managed to find the shortest route you can, youre ready to start the navigation.

To see how this process would play out, we added ten stops in Google Maps. I acted like a local florist shop that needs to drop off flowers for their clients across multiple neighboring zip codes.

Then we spent about ten minutes going through the route and trying to optimize it on our own.

Organizing by hand, we shaved off two hours of travel time, but we couldnt fully eliminate back-tracking. And, keep in mind that this isnt a fully optimized route. This is just the best we could do with what Google Maps offers.

If you’re curious as to what other stealth updates Google has planned for its Maps app, you can sign up for the beta testing program for Maps on Android. Announced earlier this month, the program came shortly after Google updated the stable version of Maps to let you search along your route when you’re in biking or walking navigation mode.

Another long-rumored but perhaps less welcome change to Google Maps is advertising: Google announced in May that it is “experimenting with a variety of ad formats on Maps that make it easier for users to find businesses as they navigate the world around them.” Those formats include dropping promoted pins along a route for waypoints like gas stations and coffee shops.
