Where I Went Wrong

How to become an Android Developer

Although this time in my life was very exciting and I remember enjoying a huge boost in confidence I was also incredibly anxious. It would only take the app to be removed from the store for some reason for my success to be brought to a halt. Likewise, there was nothing to say that the app wouldnt just randomly lose momentum overnight. I was also sure it would be only a matter of time until Android introduced multi-window functionality natively .

Mine was the first app in the store to work this way, but it was also only a very short time before countless imitators joined the fray. Some worked better than my app, and were completely free. If you want to learn how to become an app developer, should you also learn how to protect your intellectual property, though in all honesty it wont be worth your while.

Your best defense against imitators is to do it first, and do it best. I squandered that advantage. This is the advice of most Silicon Valley movers and shakers too. However, ask an investor to sign a non-disclosure agreement before you tell them your idea and theyll likely laugh you out the door. They know ideas are worth squat, execution is everything.

Ideas are worth squat. Execution is everything.

Communication Skills And Teamwork

Most employers require potential tech candidates to be able to collaborate well with a team. This involves being able to talk about what youre doing, delegate wisely, and accept feedback about your work from colleagues. Especially if youre working across teams, its also valuable if you can explain complex processes in simple terms to non-technical specialists.

Expertise In Java Kotlin Or Both

An extensive knowledge of at least one of the two official Android development languages is the first Android developer required skill youll need. You have to be comfortable with Kotlin or Java programming languages.

What does that mean? You must have an advanced knowledge of their syntax and structure. In addition, you should understand the following concepts:

  • Object-oriented fundamentals
  • Variables
  • Lists
  • Loops

If youre learning Java, then you should also be confident with using JDK documentation to be able to quickly learn how to use different parts of the language.

How To Learn Android

In Android, programming is done in two languages JAVA or Kotlin and XML. The XML file deals with the design, presentation, layouts, blueprint, etc while the JAVA or KOTLIN deals with working of buttons, variables, storing, etc . And the biggest confusion for an Android beginner is which language to choose between Java and Kotlin? So let me try to overcome the confusion first.

Java or Kotlin?

Java is the official language for Android App Development and consequently, it is the most used language as well. Many of the apps in the Play Store are built with Java and it is also the most supported language by Google.

Kotlin is a cross-platform programming language that may be used as an alternative to Java for Android App Development. It has also been introduced as a secondary official Java language in 2017. The only sizable difference is that Kotlin removes the superfluous features of Java such as null pointer exceptions. It also removes the necessity of ending every line with a semicolon. In short, Kotlin is much simpler for beginners to try as compared to Java and it can also be used as an entry point for Android App Development.

So my recommendation for a beginner is to go with Java first, then jump to Kotlin. Why Kotlin? Because Google has already declared Kotlin as the first-class language. And then Why Java? So in order to get the most out of Kotlin, we must have a knowledge of Java. So start with the Java basics then the Kotlin basics then go for Android Studio.

Need To Be Technically Sound

The Android app industry today is rapidly transforming and new trends continue to come up. In this era, it is vital for developers to be technically sound and to be able to create innovative apps for virtually every device.

Besides, with technological advancements happening with rapidity, integration of technologies like Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain and 5G have revolutionized the way we thought of mobile apps years back. Today, while Blockchain provides security against cyber threats, Artificial Intelligence is paving the way for more smart and innovative applications.

It is perhaps safe to say that not just a hands-on experience of Android Studio, Android SDK, and APIs, but to stay updated with these latest technologies and things happening around them too is what matters.

Technical knowledge also becomes a vital factor because the success of any Android app depends on the kind of expertise that goes into the creation of such an app. Hence, staying updated with the rapidly altering trends and having a sound technical knowledge is the key today for Android app development.

The first hurdle that you need to cross is by deciding the mobile app development platforms. There are various mobile platforms, such as Android, iOS, Windows, Symbian, and Blackberry RIM.

It is quite evident that the iOS and Android markets are leading platforms in the mobile app industry. On the other hand, Windows 10 applications are still growing and still need time to become more profitable in the near future.

Thus, choosing either iOS or Android will be a win-win situation for you. Please ensure that both the platforms are entirely different from each other, so you better cover one at a time. However, later you can expand your horizons to include other mobile development platforms.

Types Of App Developers

To get started as an App Developer, you need to decide which kind of type of development youre interested in.

Desktop apps: These apps are run on stand-alone computers or laptops. Most of them are customized applications developed to suit the needs of an organization. These applications are user friendly, secure, and efficient. They run offline and are best suited for office settings.

Most firms use desktop apps for better performance, faster operation, quick data access, easy synchronization, and most importantly to facilitate the jobs of their employees. Companies also prefer desktop apps since they offer data security from unauthorized access that can plague online apps.

But there are certain limitations of desktop apps, the very first being that they need to be downloaded and installed on every computer before use. Upgrades of this software must also be carried out periodically for every device on which theyre installed, which makes it quite a strenuous task.

Web apps: Unlike desktop apps, web applications have the advantage that users can access them from anywhere. Their advantage is that users dont need to download and install them on every single computer they use. Further upgrades become easier as you simply need to upgrade the app on the server.

Across the board, its not easy to build a solution thats fast and efficient for all users. Thats why app developers often earn high salaries and great benefits.
