How to Track and Control Your Child Android Device With Google Family Link

To access Google Plays control panel, tap Manage settings.. Even if your child is younger than 13, you can edit your parental controls through this menu. For children older than 13, go back to the Manage settings menu and select Account info. From there, you can disable all parental controls. 4.

Other Parental Control Apps

Due to Androids flexibility, the Google Play Store is full of parental control apps that provide some amount of lock-down features. These will allow you to set up a special application launcher that can only launch approved apps for a child, for example. These shouldnt be quite as necessary if you have access to the restricted profiles feature. If you do have access to the built-in Android parental control features above, the main reason to install a separate app is to restrict access to websites.

You could also use the guest account built into Android Lollipop for this, or create a separate user account . These accounts cant be locked down with parental controls, but they will ensure your kid is kept out of your main user account so they cant go through your email or tamper with other sensitive data.

The guest user account is different because it can be wiped in between uses, while Android will preserve a standard user account or restricted profiles data and settings.

Disable Smart Lock For Passwords And Auto Sign

Smart Lock for Passwords might be convenient, but if you want to lock down your phone, youre going to need to handle your passwords on your own. And that unfortunately means turning off Smart Lock for Passwords. Heres why: Googles method doesnt use any kind of authentication on a per-site or account basis like password managers do, so after signing in to your account for the first time on your device, all of your passwords will be available. That obviously could be a problem if someone swipes your phone.

IDG

Youll find the toggle inside the security settings for your Google account, not inside the Security tab in Settings. Once you get there, tap on Security, then scroll down to Signing in to other sites, and tapped Saved Passwords. Youll see two toggles: Offer to save passwords and Auto sign-in. If you dont want to turn the whole thing off, you can also select sites that ignore auto sign-in. We think a much better solution would be to require biometric authentication every time a password is entered , so until that happens, you should switch it off if youre paranoid.

Locking Down Your Apps

There are plenty of options when it comes to limiting access to apps, so to help narrow down your search here a few options I have found to be the best.

Oops! AppLock uses a volume button pattern to enable and disable its restricted apps list. Through a combination of up and down presses, you will be able to quickly disable access to apps that you have added to a blacklist, which will definitely help if you need to quickly give your phone to a child who is crying for a chance to play another level of Angry Birds. More information here.

However, if you are worried that the kid using your phone may figure out that combination, you can use AppLock to set a numeric password. In addition to locking down apps like Opps! AppLock, you are also able to lock network settings, prevent calls from being made, and stop app installations .

If you have a Galaxy device with a fingerprint sensor, you can use that level of security to very easily lock down app-access. More information here.

Besides setting up strict device unavailability and schedules, you can also set time-based restrictions on an iOS device. If your kids are getting addicted to their phone, then you can simply apply a parental lock on the iPhone. For instance, if you just want your kids to use their iPhone for not more than 2 hours a day, then you can set 2 hours as the maximum screen limit. FamiSafe can make it work. Parents need to set the screen limit on the target device. Once the screen limit is reached, the kids won’t be able to use the smartphone.

1. From the home page of FamiSafe, visit the “Screen Time” option.

2. Here, you will get an option to set screen time limits or lock the device.

3. To instantly disable the device, just tap on the “Lock Device” button. In this way, you can lock or unlock your kid’s phone remotely.

4. To further customize the parental lock on the iPhone, tap on the “Set Screen Time Limit” option. Here, you can provide a duration for the screen time.

During the blocked period, the phone will only have access to emergency features. Your kids won’t be able to access any third-party apps as well.

Whenever they would cross the respective screen time, they will get a prompt on their phone. During an emergency, they can request you to unblock the device.

Because Android is an open source operating system, its easy for developers to come up with parental control apps and software. These apps are made to address both specific and widespread vulnerabilities that can put kids at risk. They can also work as early warning systems that let you know your child is flirting with danger online.

It turns out that Apples built-in security features are its own worst enemy. Because Apple doesnt play well with third-party developers, parental control apps don’t work to their full extent on these devices. Some parental control products dont even offer an iOS option since Apples operating system is too restrictive.

How To Set Parental Controls For Android

    May 02, 2017

Virtually every mobile device now comes with a native set of controls to filter and protect children online, and Android devices are no exception. However, setting the controls on an Android tablet or phone can be a bit tricky. From restricting apps to content filtering, well take you through setting parental controls on Android phone or tablet.

Holding the master account to a device, and designating user accounts for your children, is definitely not foolproof, which is why having a dedicated parental control software — like Net Nanny — is advised. Todays parents are busier than ever, which is why Net Nanny simplifies the process of monitoring and keeping your children safe online.

  • Best For Time Management: Offtime

    Touch Lock for Android

Offtime lets you lock down individual apps, or your child’s entire phone, for a designated time frame. Once the time is up, Offtime unlocks the apps and your child is free to use them again. This is a handy tool to use with teens who need access to some apps, like their calculator, during homework, but don’t need the distraction of social media, games, or texting.

You can set Offtime up each time you need to use it to lock down the phone for an hour or two, but you can also set the app to block off the same chunk of time each day. For example, if you know dinner time is a 5:00 each evening, you can ask Offtime to lock down all apps on your child’s phone during that time every day to encourage them to eat with the family.

This app is popular among college-age kids, too, who no longer need parents to keep a close eye on them. They use this app on their own when they need to tune out distractions and focus more on studying, which is a great way to build better time management skills and stay focused on what’s most important. There’s a free version and a pro version available.

    Use Google Family Link

provides an avenue for a parent to set-up a child account and then supervise it, which addresses many of the issues surrounding setting up a phone. Family Link will set many of the elements detailed below to the appropriate settings, but also means that the parent then has a Google Family, something that can also be used to share purchased content and a payment methods, if you want. We’d advise against sharing a payment method – you’re probably better using instead, although they can only be redeemed by those over 13.

In theory it resolves the above issue, giving you a controllable child account that a parent can manage. Google Family Link is not available in all regions, in which case we’ve detailed all the settings below that you should check and manage on your child’s device.

To get started with Google Family Link, you’ll need to download the app from Google Play. There are two versions of the app, the parent app that you’ll need on your phone and the child app and you’ll need the correct app on each device and best of all it’s a free service, included as part of Google’s service.

Google Family Link is a good starting point and offers simple step-by-step setup instructions, allowing you to set custom levels of control across devices, including things like Chromebooks and tablets too – and there’s also an iOS app if you want to have it on an Apple device.

    Turn Off Risky Features

When you enable Restrictions in Settings, you can turn off any iOS device features you dont want your kids using on their own. This includes access to the camera, Siri, FaceTime, and web browsing with Safari. Make sure to set a unique passcode for the restrictions so your little digital native cant go into Settings and turn everything back on.

One of the most significant drawbacks to Apples parental control setup is that you have no way to monitor your childs interaction on secret messaging apps like Snapchat, WhatsApp, and Kik. These apps let users have hidden conversations that automatically disappear after a specific amount of time. More parental control apps are adding ways to monitor these secret messages, but theres no way to do it on iOS at this time.

    Parental Controls In Google Search

How To Enable Child Lock in Android

Controlling apps and accessible content is one thing, but modern devices provide access to everything through search and the browser. There are some settings to lock these down, however.

Google SafeSearch aims to filter out explicit results like pornography in search results – spanning images and video too. Google admits that it’s not 100 per cent accurate, however.

To turn on SafeSearch, you’ll have to open up the Google app on your Android device. Depending on your phone type, this might be an app with the G icon, or accessible in the settings, or both. If you have the Google Search widget on your homepage, you can tap the G at the left of that too.

This is what you’re looking for:

    Here’s how to get there:

    • Open the G app .
    • Tap the “More” menu in the bottom right-hand corner.
    • Tap Settings, then General.
    • Toggle on SafeSearch filter.

It’s also worth noting that Google does nothing to protect this setting, and anyone can turn it off again, unless you use Family Link .

To find, lock, or erase an Android phone, that phone must:

    • Be turned on

Control Access To Apps And Content

For Android phone users: The Android operating system makes life a little easier for parents by permitting them to set up multiple user accounts on a smartphone. This lets you share the phone with a child, while keeping your apps separate from the childs.

To enable this feature, go to Settings > System > Multiple users > and toggle Multiple users on. You can add a new user profile here for your child. To switch the phone to the childs profile, swipe down from the top of your phone and click the blue User icon. Note that not all Android phones have this feature the latest Samsung Galaxy phones dont.

If you dont want to set up user accounts for your children, you can hand the phone off to them in Guest Mode. Say, for example, your kids tablet has run out of battery right in the middle of Peppa Pig. You can swipe down from the top of the screen on your phone, click the blue User icon, and tap Guest. This will restrict the phone to the default apps and settings, preventing your child from messing with your photos, text messages, and apps.

To put true parental controls on a childs phone, download the free onto your own phone from the Google Play store. The app will walk you through the process for creating a Google accountlinked to your ownfor your child to use. If your child already has a Google account, you can link to that instead. Next, download the onto your childs device.
