How To Move Your Data To A New Iphone Or Android Smartphone
Getting a new smartphone can be really exciting, especially if you havent upgraded for a while. However, with a new phone comes the process of transferring your data. If you dont know what youre doing, this can be a tricky step to tackle.
Thankfully, the data transfer process has improved significantly over the last few years. Most manufacturers offer apps or software to help you through the process. That said, it can still be complicated at times, so weve put together this guide on moving to a new phone.
First up, we need to tackle a few universal steps. These are things youll need to do regardless of which phone you have and which phone you plan to switch to.
- Back up your data on your old phone .
- Make sure youve got some time and a solid Wi-Fi connection before you start.
- Have power cables ready to either charge your phones or connect them if need be.
- Move your SIM card first.
- This is mandatory for all phones, but it can be an important step in some cases. Samsung phones, for example, perform a reset when you insert a SIM card. If you transfer your data before you put in your SIM, you could wipe everything you moved over. So, we recommend swapping your SIM card first.

Best Point And Shoot Camera Phone: Google Pixel 6 Pro
The first three Google Pixel phones were hands-down the best still camera phones around, mostly because Googles computational photography was so far ahead of the game at the time. In the years since, other phone brands have stepped up their computational photography game. Add in the fact that Google didnt bother upgrading its camera hardware for the Pixel 4 and 5, which meant Googles phone was no longer the undisputed best camera phone around.
Google has regained the crown with the Pixel 6 Pro, because it finally upgraded camera hardware to a 50MP Samsung GN1 sensor with a large image sensor size and fast aperture. While the Pixel 6 Pro lacks the zooming prowess of a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra, the awesome video capabilities of an iPhone 13 Pro, or even the all-around range of a Vivo X70 Pro Plus, its the best phone for people who just want to point their phone, tap shutter button, and then get a shot they can post to social media immediately without tweaks or edits.
Whether its scrolling through Instagram or switching apps, the Pixel 6 Pro doesnt slow down, its Googles first phone with tip-top premium hardware that can match the iPhones and Galaxy S phones of the world.

The Best Phone Deals This Week*

Right now, of the heavily promoted forms of US 5G, T-Mobile’s mid-band network, Verizon’s “UW” high-band network, and AT& T’s “5G+” offer wider channels. The other forms of 5G in the US are reusing 4G channel sizes, which give them very 4G-like performance. In our drive tests in 2021, we found T-Mobile’s mid-band, which now covers 165 million people in both major metro areas and smaller cities, to be significantly faster than 4G. Verizon’s high-band network was very fast, but only available around 4% of the time.
Expect to see better mid-band coverage on AT& T and Verizon early in 2022 when they start rolling out C-band. Of course, your phone will also need to have C-band support. Check our individual phone reviews to find out whether a device has C-band.
All the phones sold by Verizon support its high-band network, but not all unlocked 5G phones do. If you’re looking for an unlocked 5G phone that supports every carrier, consider the Google Pixel 6 line, the iPhone 13 series, or the Samsung Galaxy S21 family.
The Best Android Phone: Google Pixel 6
|50 MP primary, 12 MP ultrawide||Measurements :||6.2 by 2.9 by 0.4 inches|
Googles Pixel phones have always had the best Android software, but the Pixel 6 is the first phone that has the hardware to match. It has Googles custom Tensor ARM chip, an excellent OLED screen, and the second-best smartphone camera weve ever testedthat crown goes to the more expensive Pixel 6 Pro. Android 12 on the Pixel 6 reaches almost iOS levels of polish, and itll get security updates through late 2026, a year longer than even Samsung will promise. There are phones with longer battery life or more camera lenses, but they cant approach the Pixel 6s value. It costs $600 unlocked, and it has all the 5G bands youll need for years.
The Pixel 6 is unlocked with support for all major carriers across 4G and 5G, but you should only get the unlocked version of the phone. Dont buy directly from AT& T and Verizon. Both sell the Pixel 6 directly, but its more expensive due to the inclusion of millimeter wave 5G, which no one needs and you should not pay extra for.
Google promises better update support for the 2021 Pixels than any other phone can get. You have five years of monthly security patches, which will keep the Pixel secure through at least fall 2026. Unfortunately, Google still only promises three years of OS updates. That means the Pixel 6 will get Android 13, 14, and 15. This is still the best update schedule youll find, but we were hoping for more.

Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra Cameras
Aside from S Pen support, the cameras are what really set the S21 Ultra apart from the rest of its S21 counterparts. This is the only phone of the trio that ships with four lenses in Contour Cut Camera housing, and each has a legacy left behind from the S20 Ultra to live up to and surpass.
The S20 Ultra was marred by autofocusing flaws on its primary 108MP camera, but it was an otherwise incredibly capable system with a massive new sensor that allowed it to take in more light and create a more natural bokeh effect, practically negating the need for a software-based portrait shooting mode. With the Note 20 Ultra, Samsung added a laser autofocus system next to the exact same sensor to counteract those focusing problems, and lo and behold, the Note 20 Ultra offered a fantastic camera experience.
Now with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, Samsung has updated the 108MP sensor to offer even better imaging, with vastly improved low light performance that earns the sensor its new Bright Night moniker. The S21 Ultra supports 12-bit photos in both HDR and RAW formats in the Pro camera mode, allowing for 64x richer color data and 3x wider dynamic range than before.
While you may not notice its effects straight out of the camera, this is a big deal when it comes to editing your photos after the fact. Having that much more color data in your stills means far more flexibility to tweak colors and exposure before the image starts to show signs of artifacting.
How Do I Take An Android Screenshot
Simply hold standby and volume down at the same time and you’ll get a screenshot of whatever you’re looking at. Not everything can be captured, however. Some protected content, such as video playing in some apps, won’t appear in your screenshot.
Screenshots are stored in the gallery in their own folder, but if you’re looking to share, you can do straight from the notifications bar once it has saved.
There are a few variations on this combination of button presses now. Samsung used to use volume down and the home button, but now it uses the same combination as everyone else.

Samsung Galaxy A52 5g: Samsung’s Best
Despite what Samsung’s slick adverts would have you believe, your smartphone buying options aren’t limited to £1,000+ flagships. Yes, some expensive Samsung phones make this list, but if you’re after something with a softer impact on your wallet, then the Galaxy A55 5G is just the ticket.
The Galaxy A51 is a 6.5in handset with swish looks and features that are more befitting of handsets that cost twice the price. It’s powered by a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 750G processor, and it also has a 64MP camera with a 12MP wide and a pair of 5MP macro and depth sensors. Big, powerful, and good-looking, Samsung’s Galaxy A52 5G is a no-brainer for the budget-conscious buyer.

Get To Your Settings Faster
Swiping down the notifications bar will get you access to shortcuts for various hardware toggles. It’s here you can turn off things like Bluetooth or Wi-Fi quickly and easily. Many manufacturers edit this area, so Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo and Pixel devices all look different, but they all work in the same way.
Swipe down with two fingers and it will take you straight to those toggles, or swipe down twice to get the whole thing open.
The top tip here is to long press the quick setting and you’ll go to the full menu for that area. For example, if Wi-Fi is causing you problems, long press on the quick setting icon and you’ll go through to the full Wi-Fi menu.
If you want to head to the full setting menu, tap the cog in the notifications area when you swipe down, rather than trying to find the option in the apps tray.
What Smaller Features Should I Look Out For
Last but certainly not least, there are a few smaller features and specs that can be easy to overlook when doing your shopping a prime example being NFC. NFC stands for Near Field Communication, and it’s the chip in most phones that allows you to pay with your smartphone with Google Pay at grocery stores, restaurants, etc. Most of the phones on this list support NFC, but many cheaper Motorola phones often lack the feature. You may not care about Google Pay, but if you do, it’s worth double-checking that the phone you want to buy does have NFC.
Another spec to check for is an IP68 rating. This is a seal of protection many phones have, and it ensures they’re protected from a certain amount of dust and water. So if you get caught outside in the rain or take your phone to the beach, an IP68 rating ensures that your phone should survive just fine.
Some phones lack this IP rating yet boast water resistance or have a coating that gives them some protection. Those devices are also probably fine to get splashed with water here and there, but you don’t have that same guaranteed protection. The best-case scenario is to avoid getting your phone wet whenever possible, but if you happen to be around the water a lot, it’s probably worth getting something with that IP68 protection.

Choosing The Right Model
As always, there are a bunch of different sub-models of the Galaxy S21, noted by a letter at the end of the product number. We tested the unlocked U model, destined for the US. The U model has a single SIM slot, a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, disabled e-SIM functionality, and all the appropriate bands for all US 5G networks, including millimeter wave and the upcoming C-band. Here are the other models listed on Samsung’s site:
W: For Canada. Snapdragon processor, single SIM plus eSIM. Similar 5G to the US except no mmWave.
B: Exynos processor, single SIM plus eSIM. Has 5G bands 3/7/28/41/78, so it won’t work on any low-band US 5G network.
N: For Korea. Exynos processor, single SIM plus eSIM. Only 5G band is 78.
0: For China. Snapdragon processor, dual SIM.
If you use your phone outside of its intended region, you can expect it to have all of the right 4G bands but miss some of the roaming region’s 5G bands, and you probably won’t be able to use Wi-Fi calling or similar features.
Is The Price Justifiable
The Galaxy S21 Ultra is an impressive, high-quality superzoom camera phone. When we first reviewed it in January, we were a little hesitant. It was big and heavy, the list price was high, and carriers hadn’t released their C-band plans.
I’ve now been using the phone as my primary device for a while, and things have changed. For one thing, the list price is a lie nobody seems to be paying it. For another, Verizon is going whole hog on C-band in less than 12 months. And the more uses I find for the 10x zoom and games I play on the big, bright screen, the more I appreciate just how well this phone is put together.
Samsung has some accessories to sell you, too: a watch, earbuds, and a smart tag locator.
The S21 Ultra’s top competitors, as big phones, are Samsung’s $1,299.99 Note 20 Ultra, Apple’s $1,099.99 iPhone 12 Pro Max, and the $969.99 OnePlus 9 Pro. The Note 20 comes with an S Pen and a microSD memory card slot, but the S21 Ultra is more future-facing as a long-term investment. The iPhone has nothing like the S21 Ultra’s superzoom, but it has somewhat better night performance and, for serious photographers, a much better ecosystem of third-party camera apps and integration with Mac computers. The OnePlus 9 Pro has speedy, elegant software and is also a great choice, but the S21 noses just ahead of it on radio performance and superzoom. The verdict is in: The Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra is our Editors’ Choice for flagship smartphones.
