Need More Storage Space On Android

Tip : Delete Unused Downloaded Data Such As Podcasts And Videos

Android Tips ð±ð¾ Free up storage on your Android phone – DIY in 5 Ep 116

You probably found a lot more room on your phone by deleting app caches, irrelevant Android apps, and boring photos. On my own phone, that exercise freed up 2 GB of wasted storage.

But theres more to do. The big difference comes from deleting the files youve downloaded to your device and have forgotten about. Here are some examples from my own phone:

  • Spotify: As a Spotify Premium user, I make heavy use of its offline option. However, by downloading my Songs lists I ended up storing 17 GB of music on my phone. I minimized the space it took up by reducing the songs sound quality and by selectively choosing playlists.

  • Podcasts: I subscribe to about 15 podcasts, but I dont listen to them all, even when new episodes come out. As a result, hour-long podcasts are sitting on my phone, consuming hundreds of MB of space! So I regularly go through the list of podcasts and delete the ones I wont listen to. Also, every podcast has a setting to automatically delete the ones youve listened to make sure that setting is enabled.

  • YouTube Premium: I subscribed to YouTube Premium in order to download videos for offline and background use. So periodically I go to the YouTube apps library, look at and delete the videos Ive already watched.

  • Offline maps: Whenever I travel, I download huge maps to my phone and then I forget about them. Thats how I discovered that my Google Maps app grew to 2 GB. You can and should clear out old maps.

Clean Up Your Emails And Messages

Another space saver is deleting all text messages. A trick on older Androids is to limit the number of text messages that are saved, with the older ones automatically being erased.

Click your Text Message app, tap the three vertical dots, click Settings, click More Settings and toggle on Delete Old Messages. Newer Android phones allow you to auto-delete all messages after you have read them.

For emails, start by deleting older emails with attachments.

Cleaning Out Attachments On Android

This problem isn’t limited to iPhones, and depending on how much storage your phone has, you might be dealing with the “storage full” message more than you like. Even if not, cleaning things up will give you a nice performance boost.

First, get rid of any apps youre not using. Start by going to your Settings. Select Apps or Apps and notifications, then tap on an app that you want to delete. Just tap Uninstall.

Next, you can tackle all the extra junk files eating up space. Theres a super simple way to do that using the Files app. You may not realize its on your phone. This Google app is a file manager that makes it easy to wipe out, find and share files.

To get rid of attachments:

Open the Files app, then hit Browse.

Scroll down and tap Images or Videos.

There is a bar across the top with different sources. Scroll to the left to find the Messages folder. Tap it.

From there, tap on any images that you want to delete and hit the trash icon. Youll be asked to confirm your selection by tapping Delete.

You can also clean up temporary app files, old screenshots, messaging service media and large files through Files. Heres how:

Open the Files app, then hit Clean at the bottom.

Scroll through the options here to remove junk files, screenshots, downloads and more.

Tap a category and you can delete individual files or select All items.

Make your selection, then confirm to delete.
