Android 12 Review: Making Notifications Even Better
One of Androids core strengths is notifications. Simply put, the OS handles them far better than anything Apple has ever done, thanks to Androids intelligent grouping and easily actionable items. Even better, notifications dont just disappear from your lockscreen when you unlock the phone this is something that drives me absolutely insane on an iPhone.
WIth Android 12, notifications have not only gotten prettier , but smarter as well. Apps updated for Android 12 can no longer use whats called a notification trampoline, which is effectively a stall while the app loads. This has led to the system hanging for a brief moment while the app opens. In my experience, this has been most noticeable with Discord. But now, apps can no longer call the startActivity intent inside a notification item. Android 12 addresses the notification trampoline delay with a cleaner, more responsive experience, sometimes with significant results.
So while the new notification shade design and animations are pretty, just know that theres a lot going on under the hood to ensure that everything gets grouped and surfaced properly and that notifications are basically immediately responsive .
Android 12 Review: Bigger Focus On Privacy
Privacy has become a big deal in recent years, and Android historically hasnt had the best reputation in this regard. From apps constantly tracking you to the sheer amount of data that Google collects from each device, Android is a far cry from a private system.
At the core of Android 12 is the Private Compute Core and Privacy Dashboard. The latter is pretty self-explanatory and Ill come back to it in a minute. Its the PCC that interests me its essentially a separate partition that Google uses to house the data it needs to train the AI functions like Now Playing and Enhanced auto-rotate. The information stored here never leaves your device.
Private Compute Core is Googles workaround for keeping your data private while also providing the best AI features for your Pixel. If anything, its long overdue and Im glad to see it here in Android 12. But it also goes hand-in-hand with the Privacy Dashboard, which is a more user-focused addition to Android 12. Here, you can see which apps have called on various permissions notably location, camera, and microphone. Its basically a tell-all for what your apps are doing in the background.
Our security expert Paul Wagenseil has already broken down the new privacy and security stuff for Android 12 and the Pixel 6 . You can read more about the Android 12 privacy and security upgrades if youd like.
Android Vs Iphone: The Case For Android
Why would you choose Android? It’s more customisable, as we’ve said. You get a broader choice of devices. It also gives its apps more freedom you can get screen recorders and call recorders on Android that Apple doesn’t allow on the iPhone, for example. If you don’t like the default apps, you can swap them out. Saying that, with the latest iOS versions, you can now choose different default apps for services like mail and web browsing.
Google’s cloud apps are also much stronger than Apple’s at the moment: compare Gmail on the web with Mail in iCloud. You might choose Android if you want to switch between a lot of devices regularly, rather than just devices made by Apple.
In terms of the built-in AI assistants, Google Assistant has the edge over Siri, though Siri is no slouch. This is getting more into the broader ecosystem that Google and Apple offer which is an increasingly important consideration when you’re choosing between Android and iOS.

Iphone 12 Pro Max Battery
The 12 Pro Max has a significantly larger battery than the smaller 12 Pro 3687 mAh plays 2815 mAh, respectively.
However, the 12 Pro Max’s battery is still smaller than the unit in the 11 Pro Max it replaces. Fortunately, Apple claims that the 12 Pro Max should have the exact same battery life as the 11 Pro Max 80 hours of audio playback, 20 hours of video playback, and 12 hours of streamed video playback.
Resale Value: Iphone Keeps Its Worth
With new smartphones being released so often, people tend to upgrade quickly. When you do that, you want to be sure to resell your old model for the most money to put towards the new one.
Apple wins on that front. Old iPhones fetch more money at resale than old Androids.
Here are a few examples, using prices from the smartphone resale company Gazelle:
- 64GB iPhone X in good condition, unlocked: $161
- 128GB iPhone 8 in good condition, unlocked: $118
- 64GB Samsung Galaxy S9 in good condition, unlocked: $95
- 128GB Google Pixel 3 XL in good condition, unlocked: $89

You Can Update Ios In Iphone Whenever You Want
Another major advantage of iPhone over android is that you can update iOS in iPhone whenever you want. According to a recent report, about 80% of iOS devices were running iOS 14 the latest version of Apples OS while Google reported that Android was 4.9% of the Android devices. The report further indicated that most Android users are still running the older versions of Android OS.
Do You Use Android Or Ios Like It Or Not That Choice May Mean Something For Your Business
- There were 3.2 billion global smartphone users in 2019. That number is expected to become nearly 4 billion in 2021.
- Since 2012, Android has had a consistent lead in market share versus Apple, according to Statista.
- As of last September, 51.8% of American smartphone owners had an Android device, while 47.4% owned an Apple device. Just 0.2% still had a Blackberry.
Since 2007, Apple and Google have been in a constant struggle to get in your pocket. Since the introduction of the smartphone operating systems Android and iOS, both companies have tried to leverage their international multi-billion-dollar brands to not only sell more devices but also to be the one that helps people organize their professional and personal lives.
More than a decade of competition may have brought about similarities between the two platforms, but enough differences still exist to leave business consumers asking one question: “Which is better for my small business: Android or iOS?”
While it’s impossible to empirically determine which operating system is better, given the highly subjective nature of brand loyalties and other extenuating factors, we’re going to break down some of the security, hardware, cost, and software differences that can help you decide for yourself what you need in a new mobile business companion.

Iphone 13 Known Problems
Thus far iPhone 13 owners have encountered a few problems. For example, some iPhone 13 users are finding that the phone won’t unlock with an Apple Watch, though a fix apparently is on the way. In addition, some iPhone 13 owners are complaining about the touch display not being responsive enough in some cases, which could be an iOS 15 issue.
On the iPhone 13 Pros, there are complaints that the cameras are automatically switching between lenses without warning, and Apple will be rolling out an update that will enable users to turn this off. And the ProMotion displays on the iPhone 13 Pros are not running at 120Hz with some apps, which Apple will be addressing in an update. And developers need to optimize their apps as well.

Which Should You Choose
So then, iPhone or Android: Which should you choose? Both platforms have pros and cons, and, as with many purchase decisions, your choice will depend on what you value most.
Owning an iPhone is a simpler, more convenient experience. There’s less to think about, and because Apple’s iPhone represents the single most popular brand of smartphone, there’s an abundance of support everywhere you go whether you need your battery replaced or you’re just trying to pick up a new case.
Android-device ownership is a bit harder in those respects. Yet it’s simultaneously more freeing, because it offers more choice choice of how much you want to spend, choice of hardware and software features, and choice in how you organize and personalize your experience. If you’re extremely particular about the technology you use, you might find Android more liberating dare I say, fun though you’ll also likely lament the relative lack of high-quality apps and accessories.
If you’re wondering which particular device you should switch to, there’s no better place to start than our lists of the best iPhones and best Android phones. Whichever device you pick, just make sure it fits with your operating system preferences.

Factors To Consider Before You Buy A Smartphone
- Ithaca College
When buying the best smartphone, the first choice can be the hardest: iPhone vs. Android. Both offer a lot of great features, but iPhones and Android phones are very different. Read on to learn more about these differences to help you decide whether an iPhone or Android smartphone is best for you.
Hardware is the first place where the differences between the iPhone and Android become clear.
Only Apple makes iPhones, so it has extremely tight control over how the software and hardware work together. On the other hand, Google offers Android software to many phone makers, including Samsung, HTC, and Motorola. Because of that, Android phones vary in size, weight, features, and quality.
Premium-priced Android phones are about as good as the iPhone, but cheaper Androids are more prone to problems. Of course, iPhones can have hardware issues, too, but they’re overall higher quality.
If you’re buying an iPhone, you need to pick a model. Because many companies make Android devices, you have to choose both a brand and a model. Some may prefer the choice Android offers, but others appreciate Apple’s greater simplicity and higher quality.
More Ram And Processing Power
iPhones generally do not have as much RAM as Android phones due to their app/system optimization. However, having more RAM and computing power is certainly helpful for the Android experience. According to Brandon Wilkes, digital marketing manager at the Big Phone Store, Year after year Android release phones that have better processors and more RAM. This essentially means that whenever youre buying an Android phone, youre buying a phone that is capable of running much faster and much smoother. Youre also paying a fraction of the price too!
With more RAM and processing power, Android phones can multitask just as well if not better than iPhones. While the app/system optimization may not be as good as Apples closed source system, the higher computing power makes Android phones much more capable machines for a greater number of tasks.
Arguably, this difference in performance could be said to make Android phones better for gaming. However, this may depend on each device. Some Android phones are built specifically for gaming, coming with internal hardware like cooling fans to improve a users experience when gaming.

Ios Is A Secure Walled Garden While Android Is An Open Mess
The apps that run on iPhones are more strictly controlled by Apple. After all, on an iPhone, you can download apps only from the App Store, while on Android smartphones you can get apps from anywhere you like. For example, companies like Epic Games decided to distribute their software outside of the Play Store. The popular game Fortnite is distributed for the iPhone using the App Store, while Fortnite for Android, you must get it directly from Epic Games.
There are countless alternative stores that compete with Google’s Play Store, and most of them are not what you would call secure. Not to mention the fact that Android lets you install apps from .apk files which can come from anywhere and can contain any form of malware. In Apple’s ecosystem that is almost impossible.
Choose A Smartphone That Suits Your Needs
Should you go with an Android device or an iPhone? If you want a user-friendly, straightforward device that requires minimal tech knowledge to utilize, then get a new iPhone. Youll find Apples ecosystem convenient.
However, you might want to consider devices running on Android operating systems if you want a more customizable, open platform. You can choose from dozens of Android brands.
Overall, dont limit your choices. Assess how you would benefit from an iOS or Android smartphone based on your lifestyle, technological proficiency, and device preferences.

There Is No Back Button On The Iphone
After a few weeks of using my first iPhone, I used to miss the Back button found on all Android devices. iPhones do not have it, and that was strange for someone who got used to using it. Sure, there are buttons inside apps and gestures that you can use on an iPhone to go back. However, the Back button from Android is a lot more comfortable. I could tap it repeatedly to get out of any app, and it was always there, in the same place, no matter what. Although the Back button is usually found at the top-left corner of the screen, the truth is that on iPhones, it can be anywhere the developers want it to be. That takes some getting used to, and it does not improve the user experience.

Android 12 Review: Personalization To A New Degree
Android 12s highlight feature is Material You, a design language that caters itself to you. The secret is that the system now pulls out complementary colors based on your wallpaper and themes itself with them. Your Quick Settings, the Settings menu, Gboard, Messages, and many more apps get tweaked.
But lets say you dont like the color that Android picked. You can head into the Wallpaper & Personalization section in Settings and choose from a selection of other colors that the system picked out. Theres also a predetermined selection you can opt for.
Material You is the biggest facelift Android has gotten since Material Design debuted on Android 5.0 Lollipop in 2014. Seven years in the making, Material You definitively establishes an Android design scheme and, for better or for worse, its made itself the de facto look for the operating system. What phone makers like Samsung or OnePlus do with their Android 12 skins might differ from this new vision, but stock Android shrugs off the function-over-form mentality that weve seen for a very long time we could also see that reflected in minimalist skins like Asus ZenUI and Motorolas MyUX.
The Iphone Batteries Tend To Have A Smaller Capacity
The batteries used on iPhones are usually smaller than the ones you find on similar Android smartphones. Although Apple uses advanced hardware and software optimizations to enhance battery life, iPhones still lag behind Android devices in this regard. Even more, it looks like the last few generations of iPhones, after iPhone 6, have some issues with their batteries. After a year or so, they start failing rapidly and need to be replaced. My personal opinion is that Apple wanted to make thinner batteries so that the iPhones could be thinner, and during that process, it decided to use weaker batteries. Beautiful design but poor battery life. It looks like the newest iPhones are driven by the “live fast, die young, leave a nice body behind” saying.

Iphones Play Well With Other Apple Devices
If youre shopping for a new smartphone and you already have Apple products like a Mac or an iPad at home, it makes sense to at least consider going with an iPhone. There are a variety of third-party apps you can use across your devices from different manufacturers. But if you do use an iPhone and a Mac, for instance, you can take advantage of features that Apple has baked into the operating systems to make it easy for your activity and information to flow from one Apple device to the other.
How To Enhance Your Smartphone Security
- Avoid downloading apps from third-party websites, as you can never know if theyre legitimate and safe.
- Use strong passwords. A strong password should contain lowercase and uppercase letters, along with special characters and numbers. Make sure to create unique passwords for every account you have.
- Avoid logging into apps using Facebook. Many apps and websites allow you to log into their services quickly using your Facebook profile. However, if your Facebook is compromised, hackers can easily access all the other accounts linked to it.
- Update your software on time. iOS and Android updates fix bugs and add new security features. Its tempting to postpone updates for later, but if you do youre putting yourself at risk.
- Use a VPN. A virtual private network hides your IP address and encrypts your traffic, mitigating the risk of getting hacked. If you often connect to public Wi-Fi, having a VPN on your smartphone is a must, as wrongdoers can use fake hotspots to infect your device with malware.
NordVPN iOS and Android apps come with the Dark Web Monitor feature, which notifies users if their personal details are ever leaked on the dark web. With one NordVPN account, you can protect up to six different devices: smartphones, laptops, routers, and more.
NordVPN also has the Threat Protection feature that helps you identify malware-ridden files, stops you from landing on malicious websites, and blocks trackers and intrusive ads on the spot.
Protect your Android and iOS devices now.
