What’s New Android 11

Did Google Really Turn It Up To 11

Android 11 is Out! – What’s New?

The big picture: Android 11 isn’t packed with new features, and that’s a good thing — Google just made the existing ones more prominent and easier to use. Android phone makers are finally making a true effort with timely updates for select devices, but that won’t solve the fragmentation problem anytime soon, and Android still needs optimizations to work better on tablets.

Google has started rolling out Android 11 to the general public after several months of beta testing. The latest update to the operating system will become available first on Pixel devices ranging from the Pixel 2 to the new Pixel 4A, which is the new budget camera quality leader with a starting price of $350.

The latest build of Android 11 is also landing as a beta on more devices such as Xiaomi’s Mi 10 and Mi 10 Pro smartphones, the OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, the Realme X50 Pro, and Oppo’s Reno 3, Find X2, and Find X2 Pro phones. Google says we can expect more manufacturers to make Android 11 available in the coming months.

With Android 11, Google mainly sought to make the complex feature set already present on Android more prominent and easier to use. For instance, the small bubble avatars that float on the screen allow you to navigate in and out of chats more easily and there’s a dedicated section for messaging apps at the very top of the notification shade.

For priority conversations, people of your choosing can now break through your Do Not Disturb settings.

Security and System Updates

Streamlined Media Player Design

One of the more prominent changes introduced with Android 11 is the media player in the Quick Settings panel. This feature is still present in Android 12, but Google has tweaked the design a bit since the last beta. Compared to Beta 1, the media player in Beta 2 is slimmer by moving the app icon from the top-left to underneath the album art and moving the media controls to the bottom right instead of underneath the title/album. The media players background also inherits its color from the palette generated by money.

New Features For Android 11 On Android Tv

With Android 11 for Android TV, there are a few changes to the core Android experience on TV. Android 11 is bringing some performance improvements to the TV. This includes enhanced memory management and privacy features. Including a core feature of Android 11, which is one-time permissions.

Android 11 is bringing Auto Low Latency Mode to the TV, and low latency media decoding. This comes with a new tuner framework and updated Media CAS support. Google is also bringing extensions to the HAL implementation of HDMI CEC.

Google has also extended Gamepad support, silent boot mode for system updates and inactivity prompts. Which gives Android 11 greater control over TV functions. There is also new framework functionality available for managing system LEDs, and physical microphone mute buttons.

Finally, Google made it easier to test on the TV. With the new test harness mode on Android TV and play Store support in the Android TV emulator, developers can now easily test their apps before deploying them.

What Phone Should I Get For The Best Android 11 Experience

Whether you want to be among the first to get Android 11 or experience it the way Google intended, the Pixel 5 is the phone for you. It’s the newest flagship Pixel currently available, and if you prefer metal over plastic or glass, it’s a hard phone to ignore.

The Pixel 5 is all about delivering a flagship-quality Android experience for a relatively low price, and in these regards, it succeeds tremendously. Google crammed a lot into the Pixel 5, including phenomenal cameras, an OLED display, good performance, long battery life, and more. The design is a little plain, but the phone’s also a great size for one-handed use.

Samsung’s 2021 flagship portfolio is also one to consider, with the Galaxy S21 Ultra offering a massive 120Hz AMOLED panel, high-end hardware, and standout cameras.

Quickly Copy Links From The Recent Apps Overview

Android 11 Developer preview 3: Whats new?

The Device Personalization Services app on Pixel phones provides a handful of nifty features. Notably, the app uses OCR to extract text and images from the tasks in the recent apps overview.

Starting in Android 12 Beta 3, a new action has been spotted in the recent apps overview. When you focus on a task that contains a URL such as Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge Android displays a link icon that, when tapped, lets you copy or share the URL.

We havent determined exactly how this feature works, but it doesnt seem to be OCR-based. Its able to pick up the full URL even if the entire URL isnt shown in the recent apps overview. One user told us it worked for them on Reddit, so it may be pulling the URL somehow from the WebView.

What If You Have Not Received An Android 11 Ota Update

If you dont want to wait for the OTA update, you can participate in the beta program. But your device should be eligible for Android 11 and the company has to open a beta program for your device to test early build.

If you are using devices other than Pixel phones then, first of all, you will have to join the Beta program from the company. The Android 11 close Beta program for the developers has already been announced by Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, and OnePlus. Currently, Oneplus 8 and 8 Pro have got the open Beta Program where the users can install the beta update manually. Other OEMs will also soon announce the open Beta program for their devices after fixing all the bugs through the close beta program.

So, at present, if you want to install the Android 11 now, then you must participate in the Android 11 beta program.

Update: 2020/11/17 1: 42am Pst By Ryne Hager

Our list has been updated to include all spotted changes up until Android 11’s final, stable release, and you might notice a few items have been removed from the master list, not just added. Turns out, some features previously thought to be part of Android 11 later also trickled down to earlier versions via other means, so they’ve been crossed out and shuffled off to a separate section which may yet be tweaked slightly over time.

Also, sorry for the delay in our final changelog. I’ve been buying a house.

The “What’s new” section below includes all changes since Android 11 Beta 1, and also notes item removals at the bottom.

    Taskbar For Better Multitasking

Samsung introduced a persistent taskbar on the Galaxy Z Fold 3 to make multitasking easier on the large screen. Well, looks like Android 12L will also feature something similar. On screens with above 600dp, a dock that can house five apps and remain persistent across other apps can be seen. Its almost like a floating dock from where you can drag and drop apps to launch them in split-screen view.

With Android 11 the interface that shows up when you long-press the power/sleep button on the side is a lot more useful. It not only shows you the usual power, restart and emergency contact options, but also easy access to GPay and smart home controls so you can quickly switch your smart home products on or off, or long press their widgets to adjust them in a more granular fashion.

Storage Settings Show Trash Storage Use

Your phones storage settings will now show you how much storage your phones trash is taking up. Well, technically it tells you how much storage all the files marked as trash are taking up on your device, as Android technically doesnt have a single trash directory.

A few months ago, we learned Google may be finally letting users manage their phones recycling bin, and this addition seems to be related to that. Trashed items on Android are currently hidden from most file managers as theyre prefaced with a . in their filename, which is how Android understands a file should be considered hidden. These hidden trashed files are stored in the same directory where they were originally located rather than being moved to a system-wide Recycle Bin/Trash folder. When you tap on the Trash item in storage settings, youre redirected to the .

    Much Better Media Controls

Switching audio devices is a bit of a pain on Android, especially now that Bluetooth headphones are increasingly the norm. Sometimes I listen through my phones speakers, sometimes I use headphones, others my fancy speakers or TV. Android 11 lets you quickly select your audio output from the notifications shade.

Android 11 also provides more extensive media controls for interacting with your music in the notifications shade. For example, you can now resume a music session right from said menu no need to open Spotify again after youve closed it. Google says youll be able to switch between apps in the order they were last played, which is handy for someone like me who constantly switches between music and audiobooks.

    Material You: Customisation And Theming

Theming is a major part of the Android 12’s new feature list. In the customisation window you can choose to have the colours of your wallpaper determine the accent and background colours of the entire phone. It also allows you to toggle on a “themed icons” feature which transforms your app icons to colour-matched ones as well – although this mostly only seems to work with Google apps.

The system lets you choose a wallpaper and then take theme colours from the wallpaper or you can choose a “basic” complimentary colour instead. You’ll then find these themed colours beyond the home screen – it will be picked up in design elements across the phone, with some apps, like the calculator or dialler getting a colour makeover to fit the theme.

    Background Changing Conversation Widget

The Conversations widget in Android 12 Beta 2 shows a contacts profile picture, name, and either an icon for or the contents of the last message. But it was found out that certain text in messages can trigger a change to the background of the Conversations widget. When the user received a message that contained two or more exclamation marks, the widgets background suddenly became filled with semi-transparent exclamation marks.

We confirmed the Conversations widget indeed changes its background when a message contains two or more exclamation marks. We also discovered the background can change when two or more question marks are contained in the message or if theres a mix of question and exclamation marks, and theres a change when there is repeated emoji use.

Digging into the SystemUI of Android 12 Beta 2, we learned the PeopleTileViewHelper class uses regular expressions to check the message for certain patterns. If there are two or more exclamation marks, two or more question marks, a mix of question and exclamation marks, or two or more of the same emoji, then that text/emoji gets applied to the widgets background.

Play As You Download Aka Incremental

offered by Google Play that will allow users to get into gameplay in seconds while game assets are downloaded in the background. Theres a simple reason Google developed this new play as you download feature. Users want to start playing right away, but as game quality keeps improving, their size increases, leading to long, dull downloads, explains Google.

Google says that play as you download is available to all developers who publish apps and games through the Play Store and that, once implemented, games are ready to open at least 2 times faster than before. The improvement can be quite dramatic in some instances, with Google stating that 400MB-sized games can take as little as 10 seconds to load instead of several minutes.

Only devices running the latest version of Android can take advantage of this new feature, and the reason is the feature is built into the core of Android 12. Google confirmed to XDA that, under-the-hood, play as you download makes use of Androids Incremental File System, a special-purpose Linux virtual file system that allows execution of a program while its binary and resource files are still being lazily downloaded over the network.

Pixel Only: Better Screenshots And Text Selection:

Google is also making it more convenient to take screenshots and capture text from apps. You can now swipe up and hold to access the app card view, from which you can opt to take a screenshot and edit an image or select any text on the screen event text you wouldnt normally be able to select on Android.

Other AI-based updates include Smart Replies built into the Pixels keyboard , app recommendations on your home screen based on your usage habits, and folder name recommendations for helping you keep files organized. Quick Access To Smart Devices

If you have multiple smart devices in your home, you know how much of a pain it can be to manage them all especially those times the Google Assistant just cant seem to understand what youre trying to say. Google now has a solution: you can access controls for all your smart gadgets right from the power button menu. Simply long-press on the power button and youll see controls for all the smart lights, locks, thermostats, and whatever else you may have in your home.

    Why Care About On

Whats New in Android 11 Public Beta 1 (Video)

As you might have noticed we majorly focus on on-device ML here, Android 11 has a lot of cool updates for on-device ML but lets talk in brief about why you should care about it, you will also understand why there is such a hype about on-device ML or ML on edge.

    The idea behind on-device ML

The idea here is to use ML such that opposed to the traditional approach I no longer send my data to a server or some cloud-based system which then does the ML and then returns me the outputs. I instead get outputs or inferences from my ML model on the device itself that is I no longer send data out of my device itself. I also do all the processing and the inference on the mobile device itself.

You would not directly use the model for your edge device. You would need to compress it or optimize the model so you can run it on the edge device as it has limited computation power, network availability, and disk space. In this document, however, we will not be discussing about the optimization process. We will be deploying a .tflite model file. You can read more about TensorFlow Lite and the Model Optimization process with TensorFlow Lite.

    Advantages of on-device ML

Here I have listed some advantages of using on-device ML:

    • Power consumption
    • Inference time
    • Network availability

Using the traditional approach is also expensive in terms of network availability. I should have the bandwidth or network to continuously send the data and receive inferences from the server.

    • Security
