Wi-Fi Calling policies vary across different carriers and its important that you check with your carrier before getting into it. If youre on a carrier that supports it, Wi-Fi calling is a great feature to have. It will allow your smartphone to use the best connection in your house to make and receive calls and text messages. It also allows for higher quality audio, and its perfect if you dont get good signal in your house.

  • Pull down the notification shade and long-press the Wi-Fi icon to enter Wi-Fi settings.
  • Scroll to the bottom and select Wi-Fi Preferences.
  • Tap Advanced.
  • Select Wi-Fi Calling and flip the switch to On.
  • While this has been a feature found on Android for many years, its still shocking how many people dont know it exists. This is in part due to slow carrier adoption, but also just a general lack of coverage for the feature and its usefulness. T-Mobile is probably the biggest proponent of Wi-Fi calling at this point, though the four major carriersSprint, T-Mobile, AT& T, and Verizonall support the feature. Unfortunately, if youre saving money by using an MVNO, you likely wont have it as an option. Thats a bummer.

Remove And Reinsert The Sim Card

If restarting the device doesn’t work, turn it off completely and then remove, clean, and reinsert the SIM card in your Android phone. Also, make sure to use a clean microfiber cloth to clean the SIM card before putting it back into your device.

When reinserting your SIM card, use extra caution because a hard push can damage the SIM’s gold contact area. Once done, the carrier may send your device certain configuration settings, which you should confirm.

    • Try one the following, if your device supports it:

    • Set Airplane mode to on, then turn on Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Calling.
    • Turn off roaming data in device settings. For more information, see International roaming services.

You should also look online or contact your mobile carrier to find out if Wi-Fi calling is available on its network. If your carrier doesn’t offer it, ask when it is expected. You may also consider switching to a new provider if Wi-Fi calling is a must-have feature for you.

Aren’t There Apps That Do The Same Thing

Many popular apps – including messenger apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger and Skype – allow you to send and receive calls/texts over Wi-Fi or your data network, but this isn’t Wi-Fi Calling.

When using an app like WhatsApp, your calling activity is kept strictly within the app itself and between users of that app. Your phone number is used to verify your identity, but it has nothing to do with the network at all, other than the data you use.

Similarly, Apple’s FaceTime and iMessage hand-off calling and messages to internet services using the device’s data connection, but that’s an Apple service, rather than from your network.

In some cases, like iMessage, you get unlimited messaging and it’s seamlessly integrated for use between Apple device users, but it’s distinctly different from the proposition around network Wi-Fi Calling, where messages you send and calls you make will be deducted from your talk plan.
